Service and MOT price not as advertised

Hi

A local garage to us has a big sign outside saying "MOT and service for £99".

However my hubby called up to book in to be told that it's £149 for our car and the £99 doesn't apply.

We only have a Peugeot 307, nothing funky or anything.

Can they do this?

Did you ask what the £99 covered, was it a particular car?

The advertisement is an invitation to treat, so not legally binding. As long as it applies to some cars, then there would not be a problem with it.

    Hi

It's for an interim service. Hubby didn't ask what cars it covered but the garage just told him for our car it would be more expensive.

    Grrrrrr.

Does it say anything on it such as T&C's apply, or does it perhaps say MOT and service from £99?

Then you may be able to report them to Trading Standards and ASA as its effectively a bait and switch.

Exactly. I mean we could have had the work done and then found out they wanted to charge more.

The correct cost of a car MOT is £54.85...

So you expect to get that and a service for £99 :rotfl:

So at the very least you are looking at 1 hour labour on a service £50 is very cheap for this.... never mind the consumables required.

What odds on a MOT fail on every car tested

The figure you mention is the maximum charge for an MOT.

A garage is free to set a price anywhere below that.

Do the government not get a slice of the MOT fee? If yes, how much?

Are you a mechanic - how do you know the 307 doesn't have expensive service items, or that it doesn't use an expensive type of oil?

A car's 'funkyness' doesn't dictate if it's cheap to service or not.
