as long as a newbie seller reading this thread understands that if enough
buyers disagree with our charges we will get restricted and may ultimately lose
our eBay account.
Well, more important than that is what is happening to eBay in the long term becuase the pressure down on prices is so fierce. I've had vacum cleaner bags that are as thin as tissue paper, car fuses that aren't rated properly and repeatedly blow, an aquatrium suction thing that was poorly designed. The quality of cheap imorted goods is shocking. But then, people opt for something 99p delivered and then come oin here posting threads like, why don't sellers respond to my questions?Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Since the rules have just changed (again) as to postage prices from RM, I think it's currently quite difficult for both sellers AND buyers to know what postage costs will be.
A couple of examples -
I recently sold an item that, when I measured it, looked like a small parcel - £2.60 2nd class, so I charged £2.80 P&P, allowing 20p for the envelope. In the event it went as a large letter - £1.10, I think. Therefore I refunded the buyer the difference. It's very simple to do this via Paypal, it creates a good relationship, and really, why should the buyer have to pay more?
Twice I've had coins inside parcels that I've received from ebay sellers who found the postage was actually less than they had anticipated. I think this is very sweet, it is excellent customer service and I've also done this myself a couple of times now.
On the other hand I just paid £6.50 postage for an item I bought, that couldn't tell the exact size of. I knew in advance that this seemed high, but I looked it up and it did seem a valid amount for a cerain size of parcel, plus 30p for envelope, so I paid it. However when it arrived the postage had actually been £4.10. I waited a few days to see if I got a refund, but when I didn't, I left positive feedback (since the item was fine) but commented that the postage was high, and left two stars for P&P.
You might say I should have contacted the seller and asked for a partial refund, but really why should I go to that trouble? They could have refunded me the difference without me having to ask. If the seller expected to pay £6+ and in fact found he only had to pay £4+, then the professional thing to do would be to reimburse me, not just pocket the difference. On the other hand if he knew all along that the postage would only be £4+, he was profiteering. Either way I think what I did was reasonable.
Anyway my point really is - ebay frowns on excessive postage being charged, and rightly so I reckon since the buyer does not have to be an expert on current postal prices and shouldn't be ripped off.0
