Rover 75 Pricing
Options
Hi Everyone,
I'm lucky enough to know RevHenry in real life and he's talked me into getting something massive as my first car (Who am I kidding - I wanted one anyway).
At the moment I'm looking at a Rover 75 2.0D CDT with 102,000 on the clock. It's going for about £600, which seems to me a good deal as you see lots of these for twice that with many more miles. It has 6 months of tax and MOT, which I hope means that someone hasn't got rid of it before an expensive bill. I'm hopeful it will last a good few years of motorway cruising in comfort. I can insure it for £860 with no no-claims bonus, which seems amazing to me considering people seem to pay twice that on a tiny Corsa or similar.
Am I being silly? I know the clutches break on these, but I'm hopeful that if the car is well enough preserved and I like it then it will be worth spending £400 on when it does go. My budget can stretch to maybe £2000 if there's something bigger/better/newer/less travelled.
Thanks

Fuel economy would be my main concern, but for 860quid insurance you complain.0

I can believe the insurance. I've just been looking for insurance for my 18 year old son and that isn't far different from the quotes I'm getting.
There should still be plenty of life left in it and, as you say, cheap as chips compared with a Corsa. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
Brilliant choice whtwhite!
Look at the overall cost of running it compared to the Corsa and you are laughing. Fuel economy will be brilliant in a diesel on the motorway, there is no dpf to worry about either.
When you've got it put some pictures on the bangernomics thread and share your experiences, they will be a welcome change from all the "I've just passed my test, whats the cheapest car to insure" threads.
Good luck!0 -
Fuel economy I'm hoping would be around 45mpg, maybe up to 50 on a long run.
Do you think there's likely to be some issue because of its low price (£600)? I'm not sure if I've found a bargain or if something is wrong with it - I'm going to check it out tomorrow.0 -
I had one of them and now have a petrol version. The saloon without parking sensors can be a bit daunting to park with initially but it's not an issue once you get used to it.
The diesel is chain driven so doesn't need belts done, and should be fine with the high mileage.
The car will also be leagues ahead of standard new driver cars (Corsas etc) in terms of luxury and performance, and the fuel consumption isn't bad either (I got about 45mpg from the higher powered one, up to about 55mpg on a slow motorway run). It'd be very hard to find something better for the money, hence why I've still got mine
Expect a lot of "is this yours? How much do you earn?" comments when picking up your mates, because it really is another world.0 -
I'm going to have to get better at reversing! The diesel seems to be quite well regarded with HonestJohn and the like.
I've always wanted something big.

Good choice. Your insurance will always be cheaper on something like that because it's statistically less likely to be in an accident than a Corsa.0

Wont disagree they were good cars but its not going to generate "how much do you earn?" type questions especially as they were only £22k when brand new
I've had them for about 6 years now though, so at the time it was only about 3/4 years old and with leather trim it looks an awful lot more expensive than what the rest of my peers were driving. You'd really be surprised by how nice the 75 is compared to what else you can get for the money (which would probably be a similar age and probably cost less than £15k new).
Even now my neighbours can't believe I'm driving a 11 year old car.0 -
I imagine it depends on the type of person.
Someone who knows nothing about Rover or the Rover 75 - nice looking car which looks classy and young... mini Jag kind of thing.
Someone who knows nothing about Rover 75 but knows about Rover - rubbish grandparent car destined for head gasket failure.
Someone who knows about Rover and the Rover 75 - Decent car, cheap motorway cruiser.
RevHenry's Proton apparently gets mistaken for a Mercedes, so anything is possible!
Herzlos, did you ever experience this clutch issue? That's my main concern.0
