So my step daughter has moved in but lost her job, long story.

she is claiming job seekers allowance

do you think its fair to ask for some as board?
Yes, thats why she gets JSA its a subsistance payment, why would you not expect her to pay her way ?
Luckily both my kids work, they pay £35/week regardless of their income, thats what I reckon they cost. If they were on the dole that figure wouldnt change.

Yes BUT depends on her commitments. When I was on JSA I had insurance, breakdown cover, mobile phone and a few other little things that took 95% of my JSA. I simply couldn't afford to pay keep or anything.

She is looking for work, my sister has helped her do her CV (she works in recruitment) and we have all been helping her with interview technics.

We have decided not to take any money from her. She is trying trying to help out and be part of our family, something she has never had. I guess we want her to have a bit of time to just get her head around what has happened and to be a kid, as she never got the chance before.

Becuase we have only recently met her, and she has had a really hard time, and this is the first time she has had a proper family

I think that's the right decision, and I suspect this is the start of a very positive relationship for all of you.

If you are addressing all those issues, then she will (I'm sure) be grateful, one of the important things in life is money management, giving her a free ride is not helping, everything else in her life is being improved for her by your family, having £20 quid less in her pocket is not going to kill her.
As I said I charge mine and always will, I dont need the money, but IMHO they MUST get used to paying their way.

JSA is awarded to pay for a person's living costs, not for savings or pocket money!
