Blimey - the compensation fairy has escaped again.

I think you're probably due £13,691.53 - let us know how you get on

Is it really necessary to criticise my spelling of a name?
I didn’t learn how to spell Company names when I was at school, did you? :D

I didn't see it as criticism. It's definitely helpful to have the name spelt correctly on this thread, and the poster was being even more helpful by including the web address. This website does very well on google searches so other people searching for barratt and roofing issues are likely to happen on this thread, but more likely if the company name is spelt correctly.

Thank you for your kind thoughts: The point I was making, but clearly failed to make sufficiently directly, when I said...
    Ah, the old compo question...

You'd probably be more successful if you spelt their name correctly: Barratt!!

-- is that if you want something from someone else it usually helps if you address them correctly: Your choice clearly.

So sorry that you did not appreciate this: My fault entirely no doubt...

    Cheers!

My thoughts are there is no requirement with many roofs to fix every tile. Many stay in place under their own weight.

Your claim will not be the responsibility of Barratt. It will be dealt with by an insurance company, such as NHBC. Consequently Barratt would have no interest in you creating adverse publicity or contacting them.

Hence if NHBC (or whoever you are dealing with) were taken to task you would have to identify the tile, the manufacturer, the precise fixing requirements for your location and proof that this was not met - if indeed it was not met. In practical terms this would be beyond the capability of most home owners.

Most claims have an excess, so there is not an automatic guarantee the claim will be met.

NHBC are strict on not offering compensation. If you went to Court you would be unlikely to have your time reimbursed. Certainly, NHBC will not reimburse your time.

You can claim for professional fees, but these should ideally be agreed in advance with NHBC. If not and the claim is rejected you bear these costs.

Basically, try to get the roof repaired, expect no compensation, hope not to pay an excess, and try to get a nominal, goodwill payment - provided you are reasonable.
  • Sorry should have said the builder Barratt have agreed to make the repairs so far.
  • Somethings definitely not right here. (ok of course the roof fell off) but seriously the rooftiles cant just fall off they dont even necessarily need to be fixed/nailed in place. the roof pitch and the battons over which the tiles hang by their nibs, together with a touch or gravity and friction makes it nigh on impossible for a roof to just fall off.
    Officially...
Plain tiles are nailed every 5th course.
    Large tiles every 3rd course.
    Slates are 100% nailed.

So something more is afoot here. Its much more serious than a few un-nailed tiles. Can you post up a picture of the roof as I find it hard to believe what you are saying.
