I am guessing (given your username and descriptions) that you are on dialysis.

inevitably the majority of patients will be long-term- have you considered that the majority
may enjoy the light-hearted and relaxed environment?

In relation to pain... If this pain occurs every time you go, why not get something prescribed by your go and take it before you go. The unit may not have a doctor there all the time so it may be rather difficult to arrange a prescription, even if they have the drug in stock.

Light hearted and relaxed environment? Oh why of course the nurses enjoy that for their full shift! What about patients well being though? The pain relief is directly linked to my treatment and is not a gp matter. I have spoken to our unit doctor about it , the sister and several nurses, none of who was bothered. Gp's dont like to intrude on hospital treatments. Whats your take on being given medication i shouldnt have had? On nurses using mobile phones on duty for personal calls. For nurses blanking me as i go for my treatment? Yeah thats what i call relaxed!
  • Argh I just deleted my reply..

Anyway, pals first! If not write to the chief exc or head of nursing.

I work for the NHS, and I treat every patient as if they were my own flesh and blood but we are permanently short staffed and its a struggle, but there is no excuse for rudeness or bad nursing. Please report them! I work with some fantastic, caring nurses and often find its unfortunately agency staff that have poor morale and an uncaring nature, I wonder if that is the case with your unit?

Have you spoken to any other patients about this? I imagine you get to know them quite well if you're on the same schedule. What are their thoughts?

If they feel the same, a united voice can be very helpful.

Sorry i havent posted but my old pc is playing up! I value all your advice. Sadly ive been down the 'diary' route before and kept detailed notes of everything that happened including the wrong medication. They had altered the dates in my file to make it look like it was the week it was due. I have sat and had numerous meetings in the past with the sister and the matron who just basically paid me lip service and did nothing as a result of that its obvious some nurses hold a grudge and its represented in how im treated. I spoke to the sister again today and she said i was 'misunderstanding' and none of her nurses would be off with me. I also found out today from a senior consultant that some surgery could help reduce some of the pain and yet 2 weeks ago my dr there told me nothing could be done. I think im going to have to try and film to prove who is saying and doing what to me. Thanks for your support. I just find fighting my corner so hard when im so exhausted.

This is awful - yes film, because I don't think its illegal as you are the subject and you are filming matters concerning you. be careful though - make really sure that others don't realise they are being filmed.
I am also concerned you feel so alone and exhausted - don't you have any support system? There are people out there who would help you - if you just reached out to them.

My dad had been on Oromorph for pain. A junior Sri Lankan doctor went in his side ward to see him, in my presence. Dad was mumbling his words and the doctor couldn't understand him.

The doctor asked me what dad weighed. I didn't know but it wasn't much.

The doctor decided he might've had too much Oromorph and without a word to me, injected two phials of Naloxone into dad's cannula.

The effect was instant and horrifying. Dad started screaming that he was dying, trying to get off the bed, clawing at me and the doctor and the two nurses who rushed in to help, foaming at the mouth...nightmare.

A senior doc rushed in, asked the junior doc what happened, then injected dad with diamorphine to calm it all down.

The junior doc SWORE that he had only used one phial but I was right next to him and know for a total fact that he used two.

Dad's notes said only one was used.

I was raging mad but there wasn't a thing I could do about it. It was my word against theirs.

It seriously worries me to think about becoming infirm and dependent on NHS care.

Thankyou everyone and believe me i do understand and feel for what you have gone through. It seems to be quite a common thing and proving it even harder. It seems the more you stand up to the bullies the worse they treat you and you are in such a vunerable position at the time. I dont intend to give up , if i have to film then i will. I will keep you updated with how i go on and thankyou again .

    I would film without hesitation.

My mother in law was treated terribly when she had breast cancer - she isn't backward at coming forward and I am sure they took a dislike to her because she questioned them a couple of times.

Recently, my dad was in hospital and the guy opposite him was groaning for hours and asking for painkillers whenever a nurse passed. They kept fobbing him off.

Later in the day, he buzzed a nurse and begged for more pain killers because his heart burn was getting worse.

She grumpily told him he'd have to wait as she was busy.

Around half an hour later he had a heart attack and died!

They hadn't bothered with him all day!

My dad refused to let me speak to them as he was concerned it would affect his own care!!

This guy was in his early sixties at most and we know his death wasn't expected as my mum knows one of the nurses and asked her.

It's about time patients stood up to be counted but I appreciate it's difficult when you feel vulnerable.

Good luck OP - I hope you get it resolved.

I didn't have a lot of experience of hospitals until recently when my Daughter was rushed in during the night. We spent 15 hours in A&E until they found her a bed and I have to say a stressful situation was made so much worse by 2 of the 3 nurses that cared for her there, vile is the only way to describe one and the other went out of her way to make us feel we were an inconvenience.

Once on the ward though the nurses were lovely and couldn't have been kinder even though they were busy, it makes such a difference.

It still upsets me to think about what we put up with so I really feel for you having to face that regularly. Hope you get some help and support x

Yes, the unit may not have a dr but there will certainly be an oncall who will come and prescribe pain relief. That said, nurses can administer 2 doses of paracetamol without a script from a dr, so why cant the nurses give him that?

Part of the nursing code is that they should provide a high standard of care at all times...incorporated within this are subheadings that should be adhered to.

op,I suggest you go to pals and if that route doesnt work go higher.Im sorry you are experiencing this x

Well tonight im ready to stop my treatment. Ive come home in floods of tears, had a panic attack and a nose bleed, all stress i presume? One of the nurses has set on me again. She argued, tried to make out i was lying and when that failed she said i was confused! I can assure you there is nothing wrong with my brain. So I asked her to just do her job and not even speak while she did it. She refused left me hooked up and walked off to find someone else to do it. Now today it was in front of other patients. I asked would anyone speak up for me and they all just looked down or away. Probably terrified of getting the same treatment. This is a very condensed version but covers the basics of what happened. Im just too exhausted to write every single thing she did and said.
