After reading all of your posts of how young you all were when you first bought your own home makes me feel really old when we bought our first home we were both 42 years old and that was 13 years ago.....

We didnt have the opportunity to buy any younger, we are MF now , but if we look back and see how much weve paid in rent , we could have probaly paid for a 6 bed house........

I was 24. Got money inherited from my late grandmother. Parents paid for conveyancing and other things. Made sure that the deposit was not to be touched by my ex. This was in 2005

Then 2.5 years later, me and my ex spilt up and put my deposit and small profit made into several high interest accounts. Bought my 2nd property 2.5 years later
  • 28. Stayed at home with my parents saving for a deposit in my early - mid twenties after finishing university, now mortgage free at the age of 34. Will be looking to move to a bigger house in the next couple of years after we get married, so will be taking on another mortgage, havent decided whether to sell this house or keep it as an investment

    Me 31 and dh 33.
There is more to life than increasing its speed.
  • My partner and I completed on our first house yesterday, 1 week before my 23rd birthday :D he is 23, and we saved on our own (helped by the fact that I got a bursary/scholarship at university of 25% of our deposit value which I saved while my peers used it for general 'going out' or holidays money)

Sole FTB last year at 37. Been saving seriously for about 10 years so had a large deposit - family not able to help so all hard graft and careful money management. However would be effectively mortgage free if/when My girlfriend and I move in together,

I was the ripe old age of 39.

I'm now in the bizarre position of being able to pay off the mortgage early but it isn't worth my while because the net interest I'm getting on my savings is four times the interest on my mortgage.

Bought our first home in 1995 when myself and my DH were 24.

It was a tiny 1 bedroom house and we put down a 5% deposit which we had saved up ourselves. My husband earned 14k and I was earning 10k at the time and interest rates were around the 8% mark. We were laughed out door by quite a few lenders but one took a chance on us eventually.

It wasn't easy in the early years, but we have gradually moved up the property ladder and are now in a 5 bedroom detached. Just as well really when I read the average age of the first time buyer. Our kids will be with us until their 30's !!

Aged 23 in 1981. a single woman, I saved the deopsit for a small, 1 bedroom flat and paid the mortgage myself. Sold up one year later and used the 'profit' to pay for our wedding as hubby was already buying a 3 bedroom house.

Our son is now 27 and renting a flat in London with friends. Heaven knows when he will be able to afford to buy!

I rented a flat in my teenage Years, but upgraded to renting a house by the time I was in my late 20's.

I am nowhere near being fed up of renting, I like the convenience of being flexible in where I choose to live. My parents bought property from 60's to 90's. But one job loss, followed by separations left them with a repossession and loss of any moneys they had put into buying the property. There is no chance of my parents ever buying property again nor incentive.

No mortgage company would want to take me on with my annual income, even with my partners combined, but as we have no desires or urges to buy a property, there is no reason for us to worry about it. Maybe if I win a rollover I might consider buying, but not until. ;)
It sounds crazy now but in '93 I could not afford to rent a whole flat for myself but could buy a 1 bedroom flat with a mortgage of 3 x my then 14 k salary.

I was 27 having saved a deposit after moving back home after uni. At 27 I felt I was ready for the responsibility and commitment of home ownership, having had fun and socialised lots already. I had a professional job that was secure enough and a promotion in the wings meant money wouldn't be too tight. Unfortunately this was less than two years before the current property crash so I've not much equity to put towards a bigger property. Thankfully savings, another promotion and a husband with a job and some savings means we're looking to upgrade this year.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
