Also, mouche - i understand from the schooling point of view. We are lucky to have a very good small school close by (short drive and not the closest school) and I'm hoping that dd1 gets in. I find out in April. She is currently at the nursery there and loves it. The school is amazing, they have a strong connection with the nursery and it has such a sense of community. I'll be distraught if she doesn't get in :(

  • Hi tootoo

We have 2 saving accounts for DS although one only has about £300 in it! All of his activities etc come out of our general account and are basically paid for by his child benefit. I don't save regularly for him but randomly put a few hundred in now and again and this account is one he'll have access to when he's 18. We do give him pocket money (£1 a week at the very most) and he knows he has to save that for toys he wants out with birthday/Christmas. When he's 7 he'll get his own bank account and be encouraged to save his pocket money in that. We're also lucky that family regularly put into his account - not much, but it all adds up.

We're also lucky in that DS is in a very good school (hence why house prices round here are so expensive compared to the rest of the city ) and the secondary school he'll go to is top in the area.

Goodness only knows what house prices will be like when our LOs are ready to buy - and don't forget university fees/living away from home for uni

It sounds fantastic tootoo. Fingers crossed that she does get in. Do they have any guidance on the criteria they use?

When we decided to buy this house we checked that there was a good school nearby (I was pregnant at the time) and there was so we thought nothing more of it. Now I find that though it is the closest school, it isn't close enough - last year the furthest distance offered a place was about 200yd. We will still apply for it but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Thanks RG. I think I'm setting my hopes too high.
I may have a jiggle and use the c b money and the rest I can use. I'll see how it works with the figures etc.

Mouche, they do have a criteria. the first 4 we do not meet (being SEN, medical needs, siblings & the closest villages) and the fifth is distance....there are 23 places so fingers firmly crossed. i hate waiting!
our second choice of school is not doing great at the mo, but due to our location other schools would prove difficult. still if worse comes to worse SIL is a head teacher so extra homework would be requested if needed!

Thank you MCI. Only small steps, but better than none :)

Well I'm a little cross re: new mortgage. I receive a letter last week stating our term ends beginning april and to call to discuss etc. Being organised (for once!) I had a telephone consultation thingy on saturday. The advisor said we can just move you now and sort it, I simply said ok.
We discussed a few products, including fees, I then discussed with dh and then the advisor arranged for the mortgage offer to be sent out. It arrived yesterday and it appears it wasn't mentioned that by transferring 6 weeks early we are being charged £770.....i am not convinced I want to pay that for changing (on her recommendation) 6 weeks early. Also annoyed that she failed to mention this when I asked "so there are no fees and charges". Needless to say we will wait and if the product has gone so be it. I know they want to make money, but also they have an obligation to be upfront.
I emailed her last night and I expect she will ring today.

In other news, I called my loan company (stands at around £2800 for our car - private loan) and I can make op's if I wish.
If I pay off in full I will be charged but will save on the interest, I can only find that out if I ask for a redemption figure. It can be done by standing order, but before I start OP i need to see if its worthwhile. If I'm going to be charge equal amount overall.

Not much else to report, sky coming today so NSD.

    Investigated the loan.
Its looks as though an early settlement adjustment will be applied, which is up to 58 days of interest, so not too bad. A rough guess is this would approx £80.
    Oping here I go :)

How annoying about the mortgage! I would be very upset about that and I think you did well to tell her it's not on. Hopefully she will call and apologise at the very least. Good going with the car loan OPing-research too. Baby steps will get us there in the end. It's hard though sometimes accepting that it's a marathon not a sprint isn't it?

That's a paid about the mortgage, well done for spotting it though. I'm sureyour product will still be there in 7 weeks - there might even be something better!
