What would YOU buy LCD, LED or PLASMA tv

Keep in mind that all these ultra thin TVs people love so much have no space for decent speakers, and people are confused when they take them home and they sound rubbish!
Agree with this wholeheartedly. Personally, I'd go for a cheaper screen then spend as much as I could on improving the sound...0 -

like for like Plasma vs Led power consumption is 2 to 1.
so if you say that 'probably cost about £10 a year more', you are absolutely right depending on how much tv you watch.
[MATH LESSON ON]at around 14-17p (depending on provider/location) / kWh[MATH LESSON OFF]
a 50 inch LED LCD uses 60-70watts, whereas a 50 inch Plasma would consume around 120-150watts.
do the maths.... if you are an evening only watcher, so lets say 4h/day during the week and weekend averaged throughout the year, that would be 4*60*7(days in a week)*52(number of weeks in an year) = 87360watts used in an year, i.e 87.36kwatts
same done for plasma at the lower end of 120 would therefore be double, 87.36*2 = 174.72 kwatts.
at the lower end of 14p/kWh, you are looking at an annual bill of £12.23/year, and therefore, £12.23 more for the plasma.
now... if you have young kids or stay home wife/mother/granny and the tv is on constantly for around 8-12 hours a day, you can easily determine how much more you will be paying.... i.e £24/year if its 8hours, or £36 more if its 12hours....etc
so considering you will keep your tv for at least 5 years .... calculate if the savings given by plasma are worth it....
i personally prefer LCD for 3 reasons:
1. Less glare.... the room where my tv has windows on 2 walls, so doesnt leave any option to put a tv anywhere without getting some sort of reflexion.
2. Lighter.... depending on where you will install the tv, if its on a wall or if its on a table or from the ceiling using a rod.... keep that in mind.
3. burnmarks: plasma have a tendancy of burning in on the glass if you leave a same image on for a long time..... you would think that sky would have thought of a 'screensaver mode' when you pause live tv or recorded programme.... but my missus has a tendancy of pausing a recorded programe to answer a phone call... and when she gets on the phone... it could be hours, where the screen just stays on that pause picture! This could be a danger for plasma0 -

Plasma costs more to run by your own admission!0 -
Early plasma screens suffered from image burn worse than lcd, but it's not an issue for today's TVs.
Plasma generally will give you a better picture but it comes down to individual televisions. You can't say all plasma TVs are better than all LCD or vice versa.0 -
smjxm09 - you DID say:LED and Plasma reflect the light if facing a window while LCD does not.
Energy consumption - hamster2013's post looks good to me. Trouble with making the comparisons is that people are usually comparing an old TV to a new TV, and energy use has been coming down all the time, for LCD AND plasma. It's also confused by the fact that LCD uses roughly the same amount no matter what's on the screen, whereas plasma use more power for brighter pictures. LED backlighting confuses this even further if it has localised backlighting.
I do take issue with hamster's point 1 and 3 though for LCD. Point one is about glossy vs matte. Loads of LCD screens are glossy now, giving you the same reflections plama will. Point 3 is out of date. You'd have to leave a still image on a modern plasma screen for hours to get image retention, never mind burn in. Also your example of the Sky guide - it goes back to normal TV after a few minutes.0 -
I bought a 42" LG LED from Argos for £350 for the bedroom and it has been brilliant, nice thin frame, great picture. I have a Plasma in the lounge that is a top spec and expensive TV, the quality is without question much better but it's not twice the price better, it kicks out heat and it's not that thin.0

Plasma all the way. I have a mix of LCD, LED and Plasma in the house. The best picture--by far-- is the Plasma.'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. Abraham Lincoln.
I have opinions, you have opinions. All of our opinions are valid whether they are based on fact or feeling. Respect other peoples opinions, stop forcing your opinions on other people and the world will be a happier place.0 -
The power consumption of a plasma TV is deffo related to the brightness -I have my lounge plasma 51" connected via an energy saver plug given out free by EON a couple of years ago -if the scenes on the programme are dark for any significant period of time everything, connected via this outlet, shuts down, indicating that the TV is drawing less than 100 mA !!0

The savings would be on the cost of the actual TV
