What would YOU buy LCD, LED or PLASMA tv

Going to buy a new tv (budget up to approx £500) have read the technical specs for different types but still none the wiser on what is the best.

Have always bought Sony in the past which have lasted 10 years plus.

Will not be used for playing games Xbox, Play stations or Wi etc.
Have never used one in conjunction with laptop before but would like this facility. Will also be buying a PVR so that's the basic requirements.

It's obvious not technically minded so all suggestions welcome.

LED TV's are LCD LEDs are used for the backlights. Plasmas are power hungry.
OLED is the future but a tiny bit expensive and not yet available.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

We bought an LG brand LED TV two years ago for £540 and it has proved to be extremely good. Superb picture quality with lovely even illumination. This is the model although I see Amazon don't have it any more so I expect the model has been updated.

LCD and Plasma are both good, that's why they've both been on sale for so many years! There doesn't have to be a winner.
You don't mention what size you want, but I wouldn't want a TV without Freeview HD (still handy even with a PVR) and of course a Full HD panel. I like to keep the 'smart' part of my TVs separate (it won't be so smart in 10 years!) and I'm not bothered about 3D, there's so little content, and I hate those glasses!

Or if you spend £30 extra you can have an LG 50 inch plasma

Keep in mind that all these ultra thin TVs people love so much have no space for decent speakers, and people are confused when they take them home and they sound rubbish!

I think Toshiba has lost some ground on other suppliers by simply badging other manufacturers' equipment in recent years.

Yes, I found I had to add a separate sound bar to have even half way decent sound and I have a Sony KDL-55HX850 which cost a fair bit I promise you...

Appreciate all the above helpful comments and have clicked on the websites suggested. I'm thinking of a 42 - 46 inch maximum, and not 3d or Smart etc.

Prices appear to have come down considerably since I last bought a Sony Bravia a few years back. Thanks again everyone.

Many reasonable TVs this size come as "SMART" and with 3D capability as standard. You don't have to use these features of course, they operate perfectly well as a TV monitor.

Trying to avoid 3D or smart is like trying to avoid electric windows on a car. I think Toshiba's big stuff is still good, and if you're looking for 42-46, I would immediately take that as 46!
I've got a cheapo Toshiba 32 inch. Read reviews on it first which said not great sound, slow channel switching in Freeview, but great (and fast) screen. Since I was using it for gaming that's all I needed.
  • If you are a fan of fast moving sports/action films etc and not afraid of bigger leccy bills then it's plasma every day of the week.

LED and Plasma reflect the light if facing a window while LCD does not. Plasma is getting harder to find these days but gives a great picture in darker lit rooms.

I have 8 TV's and have a mixture of all 3 types. I would only go for LED now but those extra thin screens means poor sound quality unless you also buy a sound bar.
