As you say, most local authorities have a system for people with disabilities or special needs to assist with bidding and or medical needs. I agree that, unfortunately, just being a bit older, and not PC literate doesn't qualify... You have to admit to there being 'something wrong with you' for special help.

And find out who to go to for special help - my MIL is blind in one eye, partially sighted in the other, in remssion from cancer and has arthritis of the spine and hands. It has taken almost a year just to sort out her medical records (hospital appoitments/doctors appointments and reports) and get her accepted to bid on ground floor flats or bungalows.0 -
Aww honey, I totally understand where you are coming from, but all staff in libraries and front facing departments are trained to help people. Also, if folk are not good with pc's, you can do it via the virgin tv remote control, and they also have a dedicated team that can support people with bidding. You can either call this team or they call you once a week to discuss options and bids.
I am sorry you and MIL are having such a hard time of it, but ou must call your Housing Department for your MIL. I am truly sure they will be able to help. The Leeds authority I used to work for was all for customer service and we all went out of our way to help our customers, and there definitely were 2 specialist teams to help the elderly and people will illnesses and disabilities.
PS. The old system sucked. If you knew someone in the allocating department, you could get a 4 bedroomed house without anyone batting an eyelid even if you were just a single person. Now it's all done through processes and audit checks so there is no favouring friends and family and it is all done legitimately.
It's been horrendous dealing with the housing system in Newport, you would think they would want the large house she is in. Took ages to get her medical needs added, hopefully she will find something soon.0 -

She/you need to contact your local authority adult disability services, if you haven't already done so.
Don't get me started about medical records.....
Our local PCT (oops, think they are called something else now) has 'outsourced medical records admin, to a private firm... result consultants, theatre staff etc waiting up to 8 hours as they can't proceed with operations due to lack of notes plus I had to wait 5 hours in a backless gown:rotfl: for a minor op.0 -

I am paying the bedroom tax because i have an extra bedroom.
Now i asked council about downgrading to one bedroom not that i want i like my house.
Answer was no one bedroom places available but i could have a lodger  then i wouldn't have to pay this tax. Answer to that was no thank you. So what do folk do when no smaller properties available.
Thanks to this thread i am coping and staying put i just wish we could help others like that poor lady.

Oh just get those indoor jobs done and out of the way
I was outside far earlier today than I would normally have been on a Sunday, wanted to get my hay racks planted up. I have to be careful, up a stepladder, which just fits on decking, that is the seating on my raised benches/storage......
But all 4 done before the rain got persistant
Happy midwinter
I suddenly feel the need to acquire a hay rack:)To do is to be. Rousseau

I think this problem with the council housing has been caused, at least in part, by people insisting on living in massive houses in expensive areas, which the government has to pay for, therefore leaving less money to go around.
6 Weeks before we got married my OH was made redundant. He was lucky enough to find another job but a long way away, we therefore we had to sell the house he was living in at the time and move down here. We struggle at times to pay the mortgage, but we work hard and realise that if we cannot pay we will be reposessed. If a council tenant cannot pay they either demand more money or carry on as usual till that council gets around to having them thrown out, whence they are then rehoused.
If we can't afford to keep the house we would have to sell up and move somewhere cheaper/smaller.
House buyers have to cut their cloth to suit their income, and we have to go where the work is even if that means selling up and moving. Why should that not apply to council tenants? And don't tell me they're all vulnerable, have you seen the income you can have and still apply for a council house? Our local council estate has Mercedes and even a Porsche parked on it, and I know these are properties that are still council owned.
I will probably get slagged off for that, but there it is.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
