Whatever the truth of the story you've heard - the facts are whether your clients like them or not that to get a benefit that specifies you must be actively seeking employment, you must agree and adhere to the conditions of that benefit.

It may not seem to be such but JSA etc are privileges that are granted as a safety net for those genuinely in need, they are not a god given right or something the claimant can have regardless of whether they uphold their own side of the contract or not.

It's the same as any employment contract they'd have to sign- if they don't agree in full with the clauses of said contract they shouldn't accept a job offer: same as benefits -if you don't like the conditions then feel free to withdraw your claim.

I think this is purely a scare story however I think it's actually quite a sensible idea if implemented correctly!
Why should someone be able to argue themselves out of a proper job based purely on a notional childcare argument?

I don't think it is a scare story, I think they were referring to the new benefit credit where parents of a child over 12 will need to look for full time work.

It surely can't be a bad thing...how many employed people have children 12, younger or older and work fulltime..plenty i'm sure.

    Indeed.
I agree with it in which case: it cannot simply be acceptable that someone who is claiming a benefit which is granted on the understanding they are actively seeking work is placing 'whys & wherefores' on the types of employment they will accept: it used to be said that beggars could not be choosers and to a certain extent I think too many on JSA (etc) are choosing not to accept perfectly good jobs because they have got used to having the flexibility that unemployment gives them in their domestic/social lives.

I would not be happy leaving a 12 year old on their own every day.

No ones saying anyone has to leave a 12 year old alone, childcare of some description is always avaiable for any age. The issue is 14 year olds, most should be able to be responsible for themselves for a couple of hours a day at least. If not again childcare is an option.

Don't know why I bothered posting, given the responses!
    1) I am not unemployed
    2) I work for CAB
    3) we are getting enquiries about this subject and I wanted to see how widespread it is.
    4) there is no law regarding children being left alone
    5) if child is left alone and something happens to them, then parent/s can be prosecuted with neglect and SS appointed.
    6) it is not the role of JCP to state that there is a law that 14+ can be left alone - there is no such law
    7) JCP giving out wrong information that can have serious repercussions for child/ parents.
    8) JCP threatening parents with benefit sanctions if they do not take full-time job because of child care issues!
    9) Police confirm that they can and do prosecute parents!

Good to see the sheep following the Tory propaganda:(

Ah so you haven't got any actual proof this has been said. Just people mentioning it whilst visiting CAB.

Obviously they are telling the truth and have brought in the letters that JCP have sent stating this, because something like this would have been sent out in writing. JCP do love their letters.

As for following propaganda at lease give us somehard facts, not just ramblings of disgruntled JCP service users.

Did you hear the one about JSA claimants having to look for work, can you believe it, surely it must be against my human rights, you mean I actually have to look for work.

I am not saying its a bad thing, though think 12 is a bit young but mine go to sports clubs during school holidays so I understand it can work. I was merely stating that I suspect the issue that OP posted about was regarding this. It is highly possible their client was advised of the future rules and this was the clients interpretation. I think it is correct, they will require parents of a 14 year old to look for full time work between those hours.

There is no law that says they can! That's the point!

The other point is that these people are looking for work, part-time, which would take them out of the benefit system. How is it the dwp job to tell people that they MUST work full-time. Or do the unemployed not have the same human rights as the employed?
How many of you are working part-time?
