Oh yes, I won't have that it's asking for stuff/begging! And another Americanism thing along with prom and baby showers!

No it's not. Trick or Treating came from Guising a traditional Scottish practice that people who emigrated to the US took with them.

Nor is it "begging", traditionally children tell a story/joke, do a dance etc and are rewarded with a few sweets, apple, nuts in their goody bag.

Glad to say it is still alive and well where I live and lovely to see such a tradition continuing with the bigger kids taking the wee ones to the door. We had some crackers last year :D

I don't put DD in "character" clothes either.

I dislike character clothes as well, have no idea why!
My girl is to young really for hard and fast rules, i always say thank you when I give her anything, good manners are very important. I'll bring her up the same way I was raised which was quite strict, but i had a happy childhood and have turned out quite normal!!

Did you invite many kids to your house?

Only 4 or 5. But plenty more from outside of school (friend's children, neighbour's children etc).Unfortunately when he was at a mainstream primary school he didn't receive the best treatment from the teachers either which made his classmates think they had a free rein with him. But that's a whole other thread!

I also did a couple of joint parties for my sons and invited everyone in their school years (small, rural primary!), as their birthdays are close in the year but smaller son was only ever invited to 2 classmates' parties.

Compare with bigger son who got invited probably to 15 different classmates' houses whilst at primary school.

I disagree. I consider it begging. You are of course, entitled to your opinion though.
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

Not relevant to the thread as such, but I've avoided the maternity wear that say things "hands off the bump" etc. I just don't like them. Went to Mothercare for some maternity clothes and I found a lot of their stuff had slogans etc written on.

Disagree if you want I am simply giving you the facts behind a tradition that has existed for hundreds of years in this country. Perhaps it is not a common thing in england?

Do you consider Christmas presents begging? After all unless you are a Christian it is all a bit pointless :D

I intend too. I don't dispute it might be a Scottish tradition, as opposed to an Americanism. If you read my response, I never disputed your statement. I disagreed with your statement "nor is it begging".

No, I don't consider Christmas present begging as I don't knock on strangers door and ask for a "treat" or say I'll play a trick on them. And yes I am a Christian.

So nice to hear so many people saying that manners are important, I work in a high school and get so fed up with pupils with no manners. Please and thank you's make such a difference and it does shock me sometimes how some of them speak to their parents.

I am quite relaxed with my two, allow most things with moderation, I always find the children who are not allowed any sweets/biscuits etc. go mad when they get the opportunity to have them. Both my daughters are healthy/slim because they do a lot of activities such as dancing and gymnastics. You try to do the best for your children but I am sure in years to come they will remind me of what I got wrong!

Absolutely stunned at the amount of parents not
Letting kids socialise with dogs! There are a few cases hammed up by the media and everyone has a man eating dog, amazing!

I have a large breed dog who is about as calm as it comes, and loves kids, they hang off her, pull her tail and she's not bothered. Yes,there are problems in the minority of cases, but I am always shocked at the amount of people who actually teach their kids to have a fear of dogs, instead of giving a positive experience and sensibly aiding their socialisation skills. It's just OTT.

My wife has issued a 'no gun-like toys' ruling - i think that's our only one

They had that rule at a nursery I used when mine were little. I noticed some boys using plastic bananas instead...
