What mainstream things do you NOT allow your children to do?

Just to give you an idea of what Adventure Playgrounds were like .........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pqMXplAI9Y
"These children are handicapped..... spastics... the educationally subnormal..." :eek:I am the Cat who walks alone0 -
That film is an archive film and was made in the 1970s........so the language is that of the day. It's sad that although we no longer use such language, neither do we allow children to expand their own horizons and development.0

I was once at a family gathering (it was at my sister-in-law's parents' house) when my kids asked for a drink. Everyone else was guzzling Pepsi and so I poured my kids out a glass each. Then another boy asked for a drink as well - I was just about to pour him out a Pepsi when his horrified mother screamed "he's not allowed to drink that" at me and grabbed the bottle away (despite the fact that she'd been drinking it herself). The poor boy looked mortified, and I was left wondering if the lad ever got any treats at all.
How old were they? I wouldn't be giving a child caffeinated drinks even as a treat.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
The film is from the 1970s archives, using the language and terminology of the 1970s. Whilst it is good that language has "moved on", it is rather sad that horizons are otherwise narrowing.
The language may be archaic, the message is not.0 -
Yup. As a kid I wasn't allowed any sweets because my brother had a sugar allergy and it "wouldn't be fair" if I was allowed them and he wasn't. As a result, as soon as I was old enough to go to the shops on my own I would blow my entire pocket money on sweets and gorge myself on them. Apart from making me feel a little ill it also means that my teeth aren't as good as they should be.
In general banning something just makes it more desirable.
Yes, my friend who was not allowed to watch TV when he was young became a TV director!!:A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -

I don't put DD in "character" clothes either.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Hmmm, difficult to comment at the moment as litle one is only 10 months and currently pregnant with my second.
I have no problems with things in moderation - TV (cebeebies), food treats etc etc.
I'm a massive book lover and agree about them being treasured - to an extent. I don't see the point of being too strict about that though - so long as enjoyment and creativity is had from them, I'm not too fussed about their eventual state.
Manners are VERY important to me - there is nothing better than a small child saying please and thank you. I hate children swearing but will cope with the odd swear word from an older teenager if stubbed toe for example - will not tolerate being sworn at if that makes sense.MFW!

Mine are now 16 and 14 and little was banned as they were growing up.
They were allowed occasional McD's, chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks - but not loads and not every day. They choose not to go to McD's now as they realise that other places are nicer (but a lot more expensive). They still like coke but I don't buy loads, I only buy 90% cocoa chocolate which they aren't keen on - they could walk round to a shop and buy other chocolate, but don't bother.
I did ban chewing gum - because I can't stand the stuff, noisy chewing, that vacant cow expression and the stuff getting on shoes and clothes - yuk. They still can't have it in my presence.
I also banned trick or treating - tho DD has been out with friends in recent years, there isn't much I can do to stop a 16 year old.
They were allowed TV in their bedrooms from 14, but I don't limit screen time - never have. I know people who banned kids from watching the news because of unpleasant stories and awkward questions (Mummy, what is rape?) but I never have and the answers were age appropriate ("someone being attacked in a very nasty way" was the answer when they were 7 or 8 to the grisly full answer a few years later)
They have grown up to be polite and open minded, with a good wide ranging knowledge of the world and current events. They like TV but will switch it off, DS likes x box (but isn't allowed call of duty) but will go and play football with his mates.I wanna be in the room where it happens0
