What mainstream things do you NOT allow your children to do?

I don't allow mine to be helicopter parented. That seems to be mainstream nowadays.

Why? - it's not just the smoke. They probably have a dangerous dog too. And a dodgy mother's boyfriend abuser-type. And probably some 18 rated video games. etc. And just generally these children will be set on a course for life as losers and I don't want my children associating with them.
Wow managed to skip this one somehow.
I don't smoke, but hubby does. We don't have a dog, we do have a cat but I am pretty sure he hasn't tried to kill anyone yet. We are very careful what sort of games and dvd's/films the kids watch. Now I am may be dodgy - I prefer unique or quirky - but hubby and I have been together for 15 years and married for 3 without anyone accusing him of abusing any of the children! My lad is predicted high grades in his GCSE's, my eldest is at uni, the younger two are doing well . So thanks for the stereotyping, I am sure it serves you well.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire

I can't think of anything specific my children aren't allowed to do.
I don't let my 7 year old play out the front because we have an adequate back garden and I think children out the front causes noise for neighbours.
As long as my children are polite, behave appropriately to the situation and study to the best of their ability then they can spend their free time as they want.0 -
The dog thing surprised me.
I am not a parent but have dogs and babysit for a couple of friends have other children here regularly with them. The dogs ( and other animals) are a major draw for kids.
A new kid who visits here once a week LOVES my smallest dog, who is a youngster with a lovely nature but the rough habits of a youngster. ( he jumps up a bit still). The little boy (7 or 8) and his mother know this and after a few weeks of me supervising constantly I know let the boy and the pup play together so long as an adult is in eye or ear shot.
The pup is thrilled, the boy is thrilled.
When I have smaller people here ( a friends toddler has been visiting me since he was a baby) I lock the dogs out of the rooms we are in or put a baby gate up IF I am only in one room (little people might linger by a baby gate if I pop out to the loo or something and that's a risk too far) but the dogs are allowed in if the child desires it for short periods of absolute supervision.0 -
I dont have kiddies but the rules I would stick to are:
No tv's in the rooms (I didnt have one until I was 18 and could pay for it myself and it was the right idea)
Seatbelts at all times
No 'fashion' trainers/ shoes until 10. Sooo bad for little feet.[STRIKE]£2200[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£1950[/STRIKE][STRIKE]£1850[/STRIKE] £1600 on my credit card

I limit sugary food/chocolate/fizzy....generally only allowed fizzy on special occasions and then only one glass.
They are not allowed to play with our next door neighbours kids due to them being the spawn of satan!0 -
I can't think of anything where I have said an outright no to barring once telling eldest no to climbing a tree in garden due to it being dead and it had suffered with a lot of root rock due to some high winds and I didn't think it was stable. Obviously when they were very young it was down to how I felt, eg, playing in the park by themselves but after that anything was discussed with them and if I wasn't keen I explained to them why(but never said an outright no). Food, tv, games weren't censored (although if one of their friends were here and they wanted to watch/play something that did have an older rating I would speak to the friend's parents first) Also had a large dog who was an angel with their friends.
Well they are all still alive and all at Uni doing well for themselves. None of them smokes or does drugs, only one drinks. They are polite and look at things from every ones prospective and consider the consequences of their actions.
I am sure there will be many that disagree with this but hey, we all have choices
Silvercar-glad you mentioned that, that was something I did say no to lol.
It didn't mean they missed out as such, they still had treats, carved out a pumpkin etc0 -
The only real 'no-no' that we have is that we won't dress Andrew in any tops that have make a disparaging comment about him - for example, he doesn't have t-shirts that say "I'm a cheeky monkey" or "I'm in charge".
As for forbidden food & drink - heck, if we could get him to eat crisps or chocolate, or drink cola, we'd be made up!!! His limited diet is a real problem. And we don't mind if he watches Judge Judy or Jeremy Kyle, as it is helping to improve his attention span beyond 10 seconds - children's television progs simply don't interest him.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls
