Listening to the news this morning It seems we are going to become immigration officers if proposals that are to be put forward for legislation come to pass.
As a private landlord I always check passport and country of origin and take a copy ,most of the time it is easy as most people are from within the EU, even non EU checking visas and work permits is pretty straight forward .
What bothers me once again is liability is it my fault if documents are false ? or how about if I have tenants who don't check out? is it then going to become my duty to report these people ? maybe I will have to tether them to the fall pipes on the property while holding a rolling pin in a semi threatening fashion !
It is not my job to do this it is not my job to become an inland border agency.
If this does come into law and there is sanction if not done correctly then I pity those poor folk who use an agent , as with deposit protection , gas safety and much more the landlord has responsibility at the end of the day and agents will throw their hands in the air and say sorry boss its your problem

You already check passports of tenants? What kind of a place has this country become? You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

Because a passport is a (relatively) reliable form of photo ID.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I don't think that's at all unreasonable an expectation.
Having taken in lodgers before now on the assumption that the foreign ones were all kosher I was mortified to discover subsequently that one of the foreign ones wasn't a student at all (as he had told me he was - the lying little ***) and I have more than a few suspicions that he wasn't here officially in this country at all.
So - in hindsight - if I hadn't been so darn naïve at the time then I would have asked for evidence that they were entitled to be here. If they were - they'd get the room. If they weren't - they'd get reported to the authorities (with intention of having them deported).
It's only right that people should have to prove they are "entitled" to anything they ask for in this country (be it accommodation, a job, healthcare) if there is any doubt at all in the matter - so it's not surprising that they are being expected to prove they are entitled to accommodation before being given any.0 -
It does open a can of worms.
Just as it did when employers were asked to do the same some time back.
FSB complained similarly that their members were not border police or immigration officials, but businesses are now not only responsible for checking their employees have the correct status, but are calpable if they employ illegals or residents with non-work visas.
And yes, there have been cases where a job applicant has produced convincing, but false, documents, been employed, and then the employer has been fined for not spotting the forgery!0 -

OMG that's mad! Surely it will have the opposite effect and LLs or employers will end up avoiding letting to/employing anyone with an accent/different skin colour! It will probably result in far more segratation/problems!
Jx2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0 -
So the borders agency can't do anything about it. Likewise with the police, council officials and hospitals etc. Yet the humble landlord has to identify and do something about these illegals!
Claws and clutching. It is all a load of tosh anyway, smoke and mirrors because of UKIP.
Surprisingly we live on an island yet our borders are absolutely porous.
Try living in the USA or Oz without all the appropriate paperwork, even though you are self supporting, you will be subsequently expelled!0 -

Mmmm..... never heard of a humble landlord!
As has been said it is no different from what employers have to do. I see no problem with it.0 -
