Is there a way to track an android? (specifically Galaxy S3)

Just had a look at the latitude. Downloaded it to my iPhone as i've never had an issue with my data usage.
The wife, since she moved to the Galaxy S3 has regularly had to watch her data usage (despite not having issue when she was on iPhone (& doesn't use her phone any differently now)).......because of this i'm wondering if latitude is such a good idea?
Would it just constantly run in the background & eat away at the data?
With find my iPhone, it only tries locating the phone when you ask it to.0 -
Surely this depends on the settings. Without using mobile data how can it share the location with other people?Nine_Lives wrote: »...Would it just constantly run in the background & eat away at the data?
I don't use this app, so don't take my word for it, but I don't see that it might need big amount of data for such simple task as reporting your location to some website. However, this can depend on the frequency (if it can be changed).
Also, be prepared to shorter battery life because of the GPS permanently on.0 -
Run it for a while and check. I've got 1GB per month and haven't noticed Latitude using loads. It doesn't report every metre you move, but I don't know how often it updates. It uses WiFi when it can. None of the apps described here will use NO data. If she's already near the limit of her tariff, she should change it!0

Well that one is old ground really as we've been there. Some say she should increase her data allowance (& therefore her monthly bill), but these people are wrong. On her iPhone she didn't come anywhere near her 500mb. We were both using around 250mb.
I went from a 3GS to a 4S & continued to use around 250mb per month. She went from a 3GS to a Galaxy S3 & her data usage skyrocketed, despite using the same apps (Facebook, BBC News, web browser, twitter).
She's going to be moving back to Apple anyway with her next phone.
Anyway back on topic .... thinking about it, an app like latitude is going to be no good (an app where you find the person). We don't want it to constantly be monitoring where the phone is, constantly using up data.
What is going to be better is something that uses data when you ask it to & no other time such as a lost my phone app - you log on to a PC & ask where your phone is and THEN it tells you.
Sure, having an app on your phone & seeing where all your friends are is convenient & more simple, but it's going to use more data & for that reason a 'lost phone' app would do the job just fine.0 -
Tried the where's my droid app tonight.
That was short lived. It didn't get along with avast & avast looked like it'd only allow it for 15 minutes, no more. That aside, it didn't look like a very good app.
Will have to look at another.0
