Just to double check - the phone doesn't have to be 'rooted' for any of the above suggestions does it?

Not for Lattitude/Samsung Dive, don't know about Android Lost. Most likely not.

As above, this is the best app I've found https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd

Being able to make your phone display a message on the screen that then takes a pic and sends it to you when the person clears it is very cool. Even if the person swaps out your SIM card, you get a message to tell you the new number or if they turn of WIFI and mobile data you can send the commands to get location ect, via SMS.

Check out android lost. Great app. My friend has it on her S3. She hard reset the phone and from my house a few miles away I reinstalled the app. No notifications came up on the phone itself (we were doing this as a test). And activated it.

Then you're able to track. Take Photos. Copy content. Lock. Unlock. Make a call. Stop a call that's in progress etc.

Thanks for this...I have just installed it to my phone. Looks great. :)

Nine_Lives post number #7 basically describes the precise use of Google Latitude, that sounds like the app for the job, and it's free!
