Is it the sole attraction or is it a factor?

As per Lorelei Lee (played by Marilyn Monroe) in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - "Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?"

Or - from Pride and Predjudice -

"Will you tell me how long you have loved him?"

"It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley."

Refer to Kanye West - Gold Digger.

Oh and I'd bin them off immediately if I found that out.

How would you feel if someone was interested in you , but only cos they knew your financial backgroud and your financial safety. This is a scenario a friend faces.

I wouldn't feel anything. It's not me is it, it's a friend. Up to them.

Or are you asking how your friend should feel?

Basically, your mate's got himself a bird, and you think her intentions are dishonourable. I think you should keep out of it.

Plenty of marriages are based on such a scenario.

Not good ones in my opinion. It never fails to amaze me what some people will settle for.

I think it depends on your expectations. Plenty of marriages aren't 'love matches'. Marrying for love alone is rather a 20th century, Western luxury. I think you can make anything work provided you're in it for the same reasons and you respect each other.

Not my cup of tea admittedly, but I wouldn't necessarily condemn those who marry for financial security.

I would be interested to know how this person knows that a) they know their financial situation and b) this is the sole reason they are interested.

It might be that it's an important factor and is based on some equality, not that the person concerned wants looking after or a meal ticket.

For example, it would be a consideration for me to know that a person I am interested in is not in shedloads of debt, is financial 'safe' etc. Not because I want their money, but because I'm in that situation myself and would like someone with the same ethos over finances as myself. Nor do I have lots of money, high salary etc. but I am financially 'safe'. I don't know how anyone would know someone's financial background though?

Firstly - does he know for sure, or just because he is a man of means it is assumed????
If the second, I don't know how any person of means ever gets into relationship... If he and everyone and anyone around assume that a person cannot be interesting/charming/sweet (what ever rocks your boat) without the money...

A friend of mine inherited quite a lot of money recently (two deaths in the family sadly). She said she has noticed that men suddenly seem to find her a lot more attractive than they did before! It is freaking her out as she finds men who ignored her before are suddenly interested. Unfortunately she cannot hide what happened because she has gone from renting a tiny flat and working all hours to living in a nice house and giving up work to set up her own business.

I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to know whether I was good with money or in any debt as I can understand someone not wanting to saddle themselves with a financial disaster zone. But, I would be wary if someone I hardly knew was wanting to know my bank balance.
