My ridiculous ex has blocked my phone, any idea what the costs will be to unlock it so I can use another sim?

How was it blocked? Reported lost stolen? Both the phone and the sim or phone/sim only?
If you are the phone owner and the contract holder then contact Orange and ask what actually was blocked. If you are owner and holder you can have both unblocked (not unlocked) without any costs (they have to send a replacement sim). When speaking to Orange make sure that you ex can't block it again.

If your ex is the owner and holder buy a new phone with a new sim. This phone, if it was blocked, will never work with any UK/EU sims.

It's a ridiculous situation, my ex wanted a new I phone 5 so I upgraded mine for him and I got his old contract phone so mine is in his name but on orange, its just blocked not the handset, I wasn't expecting this obviously, I now have a 02 contract which I started the process of handing over to him but he has decided he doesn't want to pay it (can't pay it), so he has had mine turned off, which is annoying seen asi sent him the money on Wednesday to pay for mine and the kids mobiles, he expected me just to keep paying fr his and has now spat his dummy out because I won't!

I still don't understand what was blocked - phone or sim or both.

Working on WiFi means nothing as the handset gets blocked against working on any mobile network.
If it was on Orange (and locked to Orange) you have to try it with any other Orange sim. If it wasn't locked to Orange you can try it with any other sim.

It's just the sim that is blocked, worked with another orange sim

Only the a/c holder can request the phone to be unlocked. You will have to use another Orange sim, or T-Mobile, Virgin or White Mobile which will work in the phone whilst still locked to Orange.

Your phone isn't blocked - but SIM locked. You'll need to get him to arrange for it to be unlocked before your SIM will work.

If it's just the SIM which is blocked, why would you need a new phone? You only need a new SIM. If the phone is SIM-locked to Orange, then get a SIM-only contract from Orange, otherwise you can go to any network such as Giffgaff.
