My friend is "of no fixed abode" (long story) and needs some kind of bank account into which cheques can be paid. Any suggestions?

Banks are unlikely to let someone open an account when they have no stability.
Some prepaid debit card have this feature, but again, unless you are fully verified (including fixed address), there will be severe limitations due to money laundering regulations.0 -
Absolutely no chance of getting a bank account without an address.0

That could lead to a financial association on CRA files, which may be unwanted.0 -
Does he have a support worker who can help? If not, I'd suggest that he gets in touch with Shelter as soon as possible - http://england.shelter.org.uk/.
Best wishes. x0 -
