    PINs beginning to needle:

The fraud, which affects outlets across the country, highlights serious flaws in the chip-and-PIN payment system which is meant to offer more protection against crime and theft.

APACS reckon this has only happened at a few Shell garages, well I wonder if they know about Clarks Shoe shop at Stanstead?

In the first scam, nearly £70,000 in fraudulent transactions were made after an employee at the Stansted Airport branch of Clarks Shoes wired up the shop's till to copy customers' credit card details.

The good news is the industry is 'still workinging' with manufactuers to make ATMs tamper-proof. I wonder if and when they'll start working on point of sale terminals? They might even suggest to cardholders with doubts about PINs that they should insist on a Chip & Signature cards.

Better news for those with Chip & Signature - This can't happen to you!!!

    James,

I know you are very anti chip and pin, but please don't fight the bank propoganda with that of your own.

Of course a chip and signature card can still be cloned and used in frauds, although ATM fraud will not be possible without a pin.

The card can still be used for mail order fraud or simply cloned and used with a false signature to make purchases.

    R.
Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

    Rafter,

    I'm not anti-chip but am certainly anti-PIN.

Lets get this absolutley right. A chip & sig card cannot be cloned and that cloned card used in a Chip and PIN enviroment. It can however be used at non chip and pin compliant shops as can a cloned chip and PIN card.

Chip & Sig cards cannot be used to obtain money at ATMs, for obvious reasons, but C&S debit cards can be used to get cash-back at most large supermarkets.

There's been quite a few cases in the press where card issuers have been reluctant to believe card holders who've suffered from PIN based fraud. I'm sure you'll agree it's much easier to challenge a signature.

The Public deserve to know the facts and armed with these facts (which includes cards T&C for keeping your PIN secret), make an informed decision.

If the card industry can't guarantee that your PIN is safe, then don't use a PIN until it is. Ask for Chip & Signature.

The following website give's the low-down on Chip & Signture Card Issuers:

    The Fool says:

However, you can apply for a Chip & Signature card if you prefer to continue signing your name. And (this is the bit I didn't know), you do not have to be registered disabled to apply for one so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Sky News investigation has revealed that Chip & PIN may merely have helped shift the financial liability for fraud onto the cardholder.
