Getting Chip & Signature Cards vice Chip & PIN

I recently requested a chip and signature debit card from my bank as I am a VIP. I tried to use it to withdraw cash from an ATM but this facility is not available if you choose chip & signature. So much for choice!!0

My main concern is avoiding PIN numbers on credit cards (as I _never_ use them for withdrawing cash) so havn't thought much about debit cards.
I have a C&P debit card which I use fairly frequently, mainly for withdrawing cash, occasionally for buying in shops. I was thinking of changing over to C&S on my debit cards once my battles had been won with the CC companies, but now I am going to have to rethink that if you can't use C&S debit cards to withdraw cash (bit of a serious oversight there!)
So, it looks like I'll have to keep my C&P debit card for withdrawing cash, and revert to ye ole fashioned cheque book for paying in shops

An update from Cahoot, they do not have C&S cards available at the moment!
Since we last spoke, I have been liaising with our 'change team', who
regularly look at improving the service that we offer.
Unfortunately, we do not offer 'PIN suppressed' cards at present.
Please be assured that this particular service/option is currently being
considered/developed and should be available in the future. Unfortunately, I
have been unable to obtain a specific timescale for you, however please be
assured that your feedback has been taken very seriously.
I have passed this information on to APACS who are of the opinion that all their member banks should be offering C&S cards as an alternative for those who need them.

Six pensioners had phantom withdrawals made from their accounts and they are not being believed by the Post Office:

Post Office Card Accounts and Basic Bank Accounts are PIN based only. Chip & Signature Cards are not available for these type of accounts and there's no fall back to signature if the 'system is down.'
Wouldn't if be nice if someone, somewhere looked into this on behalf of those with no faith in PINs?0 -
Hi James,
Noticed the same post on The Fool under your alter ego.
Why are you so anti C&P. You seem obsessed to the point of paranoia. Do tell.Ethical moneysaver0 -
Hi peeps,
Have the Banks made it more open and easier for the fraudsters to con us unsuspecting individuals while at the same time making us the ones more responsible for the losses through fraud at tills etc as has already been reported?
I myself feel that chip & pin is no more secure than chip and signature and that the banks (big brother) may be trying to change the responsibility of their massive losses through fraud onto us the customer.
Thanks to the OP for bringing this to my attention. :beer:0 -
Hi realaledrinker,
"Why are you so anti C&P. You seem obsessed to the point of paranoia. Do tell."
I am not anti Chip and PIN, in fact I welcome Chips on cards and hopefully stolen cards being blocked in near-real-time.
What I do detest is the card industries failure to come clean about PINs. There's an awful lot of sPIN and Joe Public IMHO is being mislead in so much as the majority assume that they have to have a PIN with their plastic card.
Hence this forum which will help all readers reach an informed decision on whether a PIN suits their needs or not.
It's your choice - you have a choice but you just dont know it!
Have you applied for a Chip & Signature Credit Card? If so what's your experience?0 -
I'm more than happy with my chip & pin card which as far as I am concerned is a darned sight more secure than a signature. Or at least it will be as soon as the banks enforce the use of the pin - it seems to be optional at the moment .... 'do you know your pin?' etc.Ethical moneysaver0

Yeah and the stock answer to that is, "Yeah, its XXXX" or so it would seem in the shops I have been in
