While I fully agree with the general sentiment on this thread that trading bitcoins is extremely dodgy and very risky, the nitpicking of the OP is absolutely ridiculous... Why on Earth are so many of you being so arrogant - it's almost as if you are personally offended by them?

When Santander keep giving dates for this to be resolved by and they pass, that IS Santander messing up. Not the entire company, but people acting on behalf of Santander have messed up. It's entirely reasonable for a customer to expect it to be completed by the date they are told by the bank. The timeframes quoted may be unrealistically short for the "experts" on here, but the OP is clearly not an expert in money laundering procedures so how are they meant to know? Again, the amount of time it takes them to look at the evidence may be reasonable from a banking perspective, but it is NOT reasonable from the perspective of someone who has had all their money frozen - particularly in combination with the lies about when they can regain access.

Not to mention all the rubbish deriding them for not having a business account (which they clearly said they were sorting out post after post), not registering for tax or for regulation (which they clearly said they were trying to do post after post) and for not involving their lawyer (which yet again, they already said they had) - which was then quickly followed by deriding them because they got their lawyer involved. Yes the OP has clearly gone in over their head and yes, statements like "Santander are stealing my money" are moronic, but these attacks look pretty pathetic...

Thanks for the support, A lot of people do indeed hear bitcoin and react badly, there's a lot of misconceptions, and a general misunderstanding of what I do, bitcoin hate however comes with the turf so I'm used to it. Each to his own really, I personally think it has a decent shot at future of currency, and one thing I will say is during this time of hardship, the £ / Banking system is failing me, while my bitcoin savings are perfectly safe. Nobody can take my bitcoins away :-)

The title was admittedly a bit overzelous, I wrote the title back when Santander was demanding I provide a signed letter stating that the transaction is legitimate from the person claiming his account was stolen, which is obviously impossible, they were being entirely unreasonable and refusing to provide any alternatives, and were telling me that my account would be locked until I provided this information, indefinitely if necessary, telling me that every penny I owned was "the proceeds of crime", then threatened to call the cops on me if I didn't leave. This did put me in a situation where I had no way of accessing my money, and no prospect or proposed solution to ever see it again, hence the title. Since they gave me the £2,000 I've been much more patient and understanding with them. I see it as a good will gesture and it stopped me from having to convert my bitcoin savings to GBP in order to pay for my general expenses. The manager I'm in contact with now seems somewhat reasonable, although she has gone back on her statement that I should be able to withdraw all uncontested funds and only let me withdraw £500, It's better than nothing. Hopefully things will progress in Monday/Tuesday.

You say that nobody can take away the coins from you - that is true - BUT what if nobody wants them??

You have your opinion I have mine - it is a fad which will mean a lot of people who do not know what they are doing will lose a lot of money in time.

Why the need to keep chasing the bank to let you withdraw money then. Pop down to Asda with your Bitcoins and do your shopping.

:D Couldn't have put it better.

Maybe he tried to pay the landlord in Bitcoin and was terribly perplexed when he said he wanted actual money he could use to buy things, as opposed to Internet magic beans. Unfortunately he hasn't yet come to the epiphany that a currency you have to exchange to another currency to actually usefully use is utterly useless.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off down Maccy Ds, I fancy a Big Mac and I've got a fat wad of JuicyJesus dollars burning a hole in my pocket.

Have you ever tried paying by USD or by gold in Asda? How bitcoins are different?

I would first go to my bank (or a jeweller for the gold) and exchange them - they would recognise both as having real value in GBP. Unfortunately if he turned up at Lloyds or Cash For Gold with his bitcoins he would be laughed out the door.

The fact is that bitcoins have no value to anyone except 'traders' and criminals.

If they have an in store travel money bureau, you could change your dollars beforehand.

Your bitcoins might be perfectly safe, but potentially equally useless since even if you [thought you] got money for them, you couldn't withdraw that money from your bank.....isn't that why you started this thread?

But that IS precisely what has happened with your 'safe' Bitcoins....

I don't think anyone will ever see BC as a legitimate form of currency due to all the negative connotations associated with it (i.e., using it to procure illegal services).
