Breakfast is usually a few pence worth of porridge or Basics fruit/fibre with ss milk - that is whole milk diluted 60/40. Main meal has no more than 40p-worth of meat or fish, ie a couple of rashers of Basics bacon, 2oz mince, 1/6 of a chicken, 1/2 ys mackerel etc. Plenty of veg or salad from the market, and fresh fruit ditto. I only buy bread when reduced and sometimes make my own (but too tempting to eat so don't make it as often as I could). I buy all essentials when they're 241, bogof, ys etc., that includes food for the dog and mog. (Make my own dog biscuits which costs about £1 and lasts a month)
My weekly grocery bill inc cleaning materials, pet food etc has to stay under £30, broken down to £20 for me/house, £10 for pets.

A good magazine with budget recipes (and posher stuff) is EatIn. I have it every month and use a couple of recipes at least a week from it. Has all the nutritional values too. I try to get my portions in at £1 or less for main meals.
Spend less now, work less later.

Back when I had more time and freezer facilities I used to aim for 50p per portion. I found this is only possible making 15+ portions at a time. It was well worth it though! I love the M&S Chef's Menu salmon fishcakes, but they are £4 for 2?!
I wrote down all the ingredients and replicated it, it was yummy! I had to invest in a burger press (£4 ish from amazon). So there's the initial outlay of pricey ingredients such as pancetta and smoked salmon and salmon fillets but I was able to make 25 fishcakes for under £12. Also did chilli corne carne and spag bol. and sausage and mash.
My friend taught me to store portions in small clear plastic foodbags (as opposed to tubs), tie a knot and the top. so you take a pouch out of the freezer, bung it on a plate to microwave then cut it open and serve, like a ready meal haha.

Portion size: Does everyone use recommended dietary portion sizes or 'this is how much *meat* is in this pack / number of family members' ?

These posts are excellent - I picked up the thread from the weekly email.

Just a thought, do you include the cost of cooking the meal, I read somewhere a few weeks ago that someone wouldn't use the oven when the microwave cost micropence to cook with.
