Hi all,

I was searching the forum for cost per portion of home made food but couldn't find anything specific so thought that I should start one myself.

I know this is not an exact science but thought it might be interesting to find out. I seem to recall that I made bread and butter pudding at a cost of 35p a portion ( it could have been 15p a portion actually I can't remember but did price it up at the time.) I seem to recall making a pizza at just over a £1 but again a little hazy.

Having said that and to put a bit more meat on the bones so to speak, I am going to make a couple of meals tonight or tomorrow pending on family commitments and I will post a breakdown on all costs to give a price per portion PPP ! and see what you think

"Tonight Mathew I will be mainly making Irish stew and Beef Goulash" :) Watch this space, you may even get photos if I can suss it out.

Steve

Great thread idea! I rarely cost things out this way, but I did once when I was trying to show my OH which meals were economical and which were not. For awhile I used oven pizza as his gauge, although now he makes things much more cheaply, but it made sense to him that a meal wasn't cheap if it cost more to make than oven pizza. I would love to see costings of recipes!

Sometimes its more or less and depends on how much I eat or make something last over a number of meals.

Tonight I had egg and cress and tuna and cucumber sandwiches worth approx £2.50 I paid approx £1 that's 25p per sandwich. Now what would that cost if HM(which I would often do?)I have to buy cucumber, at least an egg, cress, tuna and use 4 slices of bread.

Most of my meals once the intial cost is out of the way cost me approx 50p(at their cheapest)£2(at their most expensive)but I use food that is reduced/on offer a lot.

It is really nice, I used Lidl's Lincolnshire sausages, I buy them when they are half price (74p) and I use all 8! I do drain off some of the fat from the sausages though after cooking them and before cooking the onion

There was a spreadsheet on here for doing this some time ago. Can't remember who posted it but I have it on my PC. I can't work out how to add a spreadsheet to a post, otherwise I would add it here:( for everyone.
