I actually feel really bad I have never even thought about costing out meals. That said reading some of the posts I will try tonight. We do eat a lot of home grown veggies so i think that that will help keep the cost down.

So sad i am looking forward to totting it up.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

I started costing our portions last month. I try to keep main weekday meals under £1 per portion. In actuality, they usually come up around 50p. We have a store cupboard, lots of spices and herbs, bulk buy, use meat as a flavouring, go easy on the cheese and eat lots of pulses, which reduce the costs exponentially.

Rough costings of things we eat regularly, min to max:

Goulash 50p/portion (got in down to 27p using reduced mince yesterday;))
    Tuna tomato pasta - 40p/p
    Lentil pasta - 30p/p
    Veg lasagne - 45p/p
    Meat lasagne - 60p/p
    Stew - 20-50p/p,
    Momo (stuffed dumplings) 25-60p/p
    Stirfry - 20p-70p/p.
    Pizza - 25-60/p
Wraps, bean dip and salad - 60p/p

We do extravagant meals too, up to a fiver a head depending on the occasion and who is coming to tea :)

I aim for under £1 per head for a meal, I would be interested to work out the actual cost of things though, especially bakey things and soups! For some things like pies and lasagnes, I probably spend more than what a ready-made one might cost, but they are usually bigger, tastier and probably healthier too.

Did anyone ever get the EasyFood magazine? It was supposed to give good budget recipes but once I'd bought it a few times I realised it seemed to be only an advertising magazine, giving boring ideas on what to do with brand name foods. It would give you a "recipe" for making tomato pasta with dried pasta and a jar of branded pasta sauce :rotfl: (not kidding at all) Then, of course, they'd have a section on feeding the family cheaply, giving what they considered to be budget recipes. It very often said something like "only £2.56 per person!" which is not a cheap meal in our house! Again, it's probably mostly because they used branded convienence foods that they were advertising, but sometimes I had to try and work out why a spag bol for four was costing £15 :rotfl:

    Morning all,

Ok so I had my session and I really enjoyed it, the total coast was £27.98 and this gave me 25 portions in total therefore £1.12 per portion. (small bowl left over will be eaten tonight with a few veggies added, big bowl is going to be the base of a pasta dish)

I originally thought one metal tray was like one portion but after discussion with the good lady and relating that size container to a Chinese take away, I think we can safely say that one will feed both of us with added vegetables obviously.

The meat was £18.99 which I am now sure I can do better on. The recipe called specifically for Beef shin and Scrag end of Lamb. SM didn’t seem to stock that specific meat and I therefore went to a butcher. He batched 3kg in weight in total for the meat and I now feel I paid a lot for bone. The SM did equivalent meat which I think would work out cheaper. Whist I know quality is good at the butcher and I do want to support them, I have to be mindful of cost.

Any way after we have eaten some I will let you know about portion size and quality.

    Regards

    Steve
