In Scotland smear tests are given regardless of risk from age 20 despite evidence showing this is a low risk group. Everywhere else it is 25 onwards. It's ridiculous to say that the treatment is a completely free choice when you get tabloid stories, adverising and been seen as non compliant by medics.
Smear testing isn't useless but if any of you actually bothered to read this thread you might understand the point I'm making.
Your point is pointless though. If you don't want the test, tell them so. You are quite able to post on here so quite capable of conveying your wishes to your doctor. No one is forcing you.
I don't find smear tests embarrassing any more. I think once you've had children, nothing is sacred4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

I don't have children, and I am not worried about the embarrassment of the smear.....I just don't get why it's more embarrassing than sex. (I am not embarrassed by sex to put that in the correct perspective)0 -

In the US you can get them from as soon as your state says it's legal to have sex. Most US women I've discussed this with are horrified at the thought of having to wait till you're 25, and only having it every three years, the reccomendation there is to have a smear yearly once you become sexually active.
As to saying "It's ridiculous to say that the treatment is a completely free choice when you get tabloid stories, adverising and been seen as non compliant by medics." I can only think that you've got a very hazy idea as to the concept of free choice, or that you're unusually sensitive to anything that could be interpreted as critiscism of your own choices. As the US cousins would say, grow a pair! If you don't want to go, don't, no-one is forcing you. But don't start feeling that you're being unfairly bullied in some way just because of a ongoing public health message designed to save lives.Val.0 -
I have just recieved my latest letter. It begins as follows:
I am writing to invite you to come for a cervical screening test. Cervical screening is a free and confidential service offered by the NHS to all women aged 25 to 64.
Nothing compulsory sounding about mine from CO Durham and Darlington trust.
I will be going for my test.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth0 -

Well I suppose it could be embarrassing getting your bits out in front of a strangerThat's all I meant by that

it appears in Scotland smear tests are offered for your age group - I don't know how many ways to say this. If you don't want to make an appointment, don't.
And regardless of tabloid stories and advertising, you still have a choice. What other things have you been swayed to do or not do due to advertising or tabloid stories?
I truly don't understand why you have got on your high horse about this. Scotland has free prescriptions, England doesn't. Do you want to pay for your prescriptions because people in England do? Scotland spends her NHS budget in a different way to England. Why? Because they have deemed their way to be beneficial for their residents.0 -
my first smear in 2010 picked up stage 1a1 cervical cancer on 2 seperate areas on my cervix. i was so lucky to be treated with 2lletz treatments and that was it..... all clear ever since. a smear absolutely saved my fertility if not my life. to be honest, i was 3 months late going as you just dont think these things happen to you, but they do! both my best friends have also had cin3 (pre-cancer) removed via lletz picked up on a smear. so i do think they are so important.

well... That can be sex too:eek:
But also, the stranger isn't going to suggest even a fraction of the things sexual partners have over the years. Lying with ones knees apart for a few minutes with someone who is not particularly interested in your aesthetics is pretty much less embarrassing than, well...um....I 'm not going into details!0 -
lol I think I'll bow out of this one now.
It's not a choice I would make not to have one.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Personally i dont give two hoots whether you have a smear but i do wonder how you can be ORDERED? do they actually use that word on the letter? if so seek advice from your Solicitor for threatning behaviour and your breach of human rights, surely your lady parts have rights? :cool:0
