  • I did a move a few weeks ago, I don't own much stuff at all (I have my clothes, computer, some dvds, documents, bedding) so I predicted I'd have 7 boxes worth at most... after finishing packing I found I had over double that, 16 boxes. You would not believe the amount of space stuff takes up. There is absolutely no way you're going to be able to do this by train, considering how little storage space trains have available. You'll get turned away if you turn up with >3 suitcases worth.

The way I did it (a 200 mile move) was to find a guy in the local paper, he charged me £280 and he got it done perfectly, there were people offering to do it for less but the guy I went with seemed the nicest. Much cheaper than removals companies (the costs for those for that distance were £1k+)... You'll be able to find someone willing to do it for about £1 per mile if you ask around, that's not ideal compared to £25 but when that £25 also comes with added costs (hint: it's losing your job!) it's not worth it.

You're never going to get this to work, especially with such thin margins... not least because new builds are notoriously never on time. Your contract might state that you get the keys on August x, reality however will not let that happen. If you get the keys before September you'll be lucky!

You say in your opening post that you will be handing in your keys 3 days after getting your new flat, 10 mins after you wrote the above. I will ask again, is this a wind up?

A one day travelcard? OP - do you really think you can ferry the entire contents of your home, by hand, over numerous trips? How long does the train take each way. Have you worked out how many trips you can fit in one day? Will your possessions split into that number of trips and be physically manageable? Sounds completely unworkable and exhausting to me.

A man with a large van would be the only way really. You could pack up in the evening, van takes your stuff to your new place whilst you're at work, then that evening you go up to new place and unpack. Not ideal, but solves the problem of no holiday time. You have until August to save for the van.

PS newbuilds are never finished on time!!

I am subletting my flat out to a friend, the majority of my belongings will be staying in my garage until I move.

If they are in your garage then surely you can move them any time...not just on two days in August.

The garage is part of my current flat, when I hand keys for flat in, I also hand the garage keys in.

    Surely a wind-up!

Any landlord who allows sub-letting doesn't have a clue, and is asking for very serious legal problems.
