Moving house, work wont give time off to do so.

Options
Hi there.

I will be moving house in august, and I only have a 2 day window to complete the move. Its not just a case of getting in a van and moving, I need to do it by train.

As soon as I found out in january, I filled out a holiday form for time off to complete the move. I have just been told that the holiday has not been approved and that I cannot take it as they have too many people on holiday at that time.

Is there anything I can do? If not i'm going to have to phone in sick but surely it would flag up as I have attempted to book holiday..

They have already given you valid reason as to why it cannot be booked - it's not their concern nor is it their problem, sorry to sound a little blunt, but their concern is between your start time & your finish time.

I'd also strongly advise against phoning in sick, that's the sure fire route to disciplinary action!

Why fill out a form in Jan and only find out you have not got the time off now?

Who booked holiday after you and get it, is the question?

I'm hoping that it doesn't come to phoning in sick. the only other option I have is trying to find someone to cover my shift, but who wants to work in the summer on a Saturday and Sunday?

No one got holiday after me. My manager was off sick for several months so only holidays that were close by were worked through.

Had those people that are already off at that , booked the time off and been told they could take it before you had? If they had, I think your employer is probably within its rights to decline yours although, to give you time to change your plans etc they couldve probably told you sooner that they couldn't sign it off.

I have no experience or knowledge of rights etc but from what I've gathered in past and present employment, I think they're right.

Is there anyway you can change your moving date as your employer could pull you up on the fact that you called in sick at the same time you'd planned annual leave, could be a bit awkward!

I'm sure someone will comment with some more helpful and factual information soon

Its going to be rather difficult to move sooner or later.

We get the keys to our flat on the friday, and I have to hand the keys in for my current flat on the monday. My landlord has already got several tenants waiting to move in to my place, i'd end up homeless/losing all my stuff if I cant get the time off.

Do you have anyone that could help you? Someone with a van or large car? That would save a load of time... Or even someone with a licence so that you could hire a van/large car to do it?
