That's weird. They came round ours, measured, designed and gave us a quote. Won't sell it to us though!

Our quote was for Glendevon White Gloss i think. Either that or the gloss shaker one. The quote didn't say unless its in the product code.
  • is a builder fitting it for you? if so normally they will have a trade account at howdens ask them!

Sorry to resurrect an old threat - but my friends have just moved into a flat with a new but very poorly designed and fitted Howdens kitchen. At first I thought it was a Ikea kitchen the vendors had fitted themselves, but I found a Howden's label in a cupboard when I was cleaning. I can't imagine it was fitted by Howden's themselves tho!! (screws sticking out, protective coverings not removed and now peeling but sandwiched between units, fridge doesn't open fully because of the radiator, worktop poorly fitted... it goes on)

Anyway, to my point - my Dad is going to redo the kitchen for them in a few months, but we want to reuse the units and doors, as they are of good quality and to get the kitchen the way they want it will only require an additional 4 base units and doors.

So what do you have to do to open a trade account at Howdens and be allowed to buy their stuff? I don't think we know any builders etc. that we could ask to buy for us!

Tell them you are doing loads of work in your house - doors, floors etc and ask if they will open up a 'single user' account
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

I am desperate to sort out my kitchen. I only want to replace the doors as the kitchen itself is German made and very good quality, I am just tired of the style and want to change the overall look.
I am using the Joiner who did all the work for me over the years although at the time he was working for the Kitchen Company.
I know the standard of his work and he will do an excellent job for me.
He has suggested Howdens and Magnet.
Howdens quote he has and all I have is the overall price of the kitchen and then his labour costs etc.
Quote is for doors Sink fridge and a cooker hood and worktops and handles.
Just over £2200 Not sure how this stacks up.
I also had Magnet quote for me but even at this early stage they have failed to get anything right.
They had to be chased up for the quote and when I got it £3200 but on closer inspection they had an oven a freezer added. Also it is for unit replacement and they now say that it has to be as their doors would not fit my units.
They then revised the price to £1850 this includes units sink and tap handles worktops and a fridge and cooker hood.
My Joiner then went in yesterday am and the Guy who did the measuring up (he told me the doors would not fit despite he being out here to measure up) the someone else had done the estimate so it would need to wait until Monday for them to look at it again.
It does not fill me with confidence and being pretty well only slightly elderly !!! I am a senior and also widowed so feel very much at a loss and at everyones mercy.
I do trust my Joiner and he has told me that Magnet should anything be damaged or the order not correct it can take them sometimes weeks to send the replacements.
Makes me feel I should avoid them like the plague,
I have read a forum on Howdens Complaints and on it there seems to be many reviews with units where the laminate is bubbling or peeling and also appliances faulty. These people are saying that the after sales is more or less non existant.
All this leaves me confused and cautious. I would appreciate any advice or help you can offer me.
The Magnet quote I have in full as my Joiner said he would give it at the trade price. I don't like the idea of not knowing what the Howdens price is. I now have the total list to be supplied but without the prices.

    Many thanks

    Sue

Magnet (at that price would presume it's Magnet Trade) are quite right about their doors not fitting others units. Howdens doors will probably not fit either unless the existing units are theirs.

Ask your joiner to provide you with an itemised quote from Howdens.
They should be willing to provide this. Sometimes designers are reluctant to do this as it is easy for you to take their quote elsewhere for price comparison, but in this case when you are looking to replicate or even just replace doors on your existing layout they really should have no objection to doing this.

Howdens own brand "Lamona" appliances are Beko and best avoided.

Should add that the trade love Howdens for the fact that they stock, so any damages/design errors can be quickly rectified, so they dont have to wait around before they get paid because they are hanging around for replacements parts. Not because the quality is brilliant though.

The truth is, as with most things, you pay for what you get. The quality is fair for what you pay.

I would also suggest checking out Wickes or Benchmarx if you have either in your area. Same kitchens, but Benchmarx operate in the same way as Howdens as trade only stocking outlets with pre-built units. Wickes are to order and come flat-pack. Carcasse quality is better than Howdens for sure. Magnet are decent quality too though Magnet trade units are on a par with Howdens. Wren good quality for the price also, but if you ignore the odd spammer, it seems if anything goes wrong it takes an age to put it right.
  • The existing units dont have to be Howdens for the doors to fit. Most standard units are 720 in height and if yours are Howdens will fit. Though I prefer Benchmarx their standard doors are 735mm high so do not fit many carcasses other than their own.

Thanks for your responses. Howdens only seemed to have a problem with one door size and that is a carasol unit. Doors would either need a fill of the Joiner would been to cut something. Don't really understand it but there has been a conservation with the person from Howdens who came out and my Joiner.
Tomorrow I am going to go back in to Howden as now I am undecided whether to have white or cream.
Also undecided as to whether to have glass or mosaic glass tiles for the splash back and an upstand.
Trying to get things straight in my head. Initially I was going to keep the kitchen floor but it is ceramic tiles with a border tile and given the colour would dictate everything else in the Kitchen.
When I started looking at magazines and a few show rooms you see what is current. I am trying to keep my budget around £5000-£6000 and hope that I can do keep to this. I am not going to take the Beko fridge but will opt for Bosch. Will price it with Howden but then I don't really know what they will charge. I would be perfectly happy to order this on line myself. I got a new integrated Freezer a couple of years ago and just had it delivered.
I order most things online these days. Just completed a grocery order for Tesco to be delivered tomorrow.
Off to have another look through a couple of magazines. I think the joiner is keen to get things moving. I am going on holiday in 6 weeks but I think I need to spend this week weighing up all the ideas.
I am extremely grateful for any advice.

  • Hi!
Has anyone had a quote from Howdens for worktops recently?
I am interested in solid wood and wood-style laminate.
Howdens have the nicest colours I've seen (oak block) and I was wondering what sort of price I'd be looking at per 3m length.
    Thanks in advance
