I've checked all the power cable again and all is ok with them. I don't think I've got a service tag as its 6+years.NiftyDigits wrote: »Checked the cables between the PC and the tower? If you can hear the Windows music then unlikely a Motherboard problem and possibly the graphics card, but I wouldn't bet £19.98 on it.
What's the Service Tag on your machine?
Don't know what else to try now except buy a new video card and install it. Any other ideas? TIA0 -

A local chap with good feedback will do a drop off & diagnose service for £20. Or I can spend £20 on a video card that doesn't fix it.0

Your choice. Hands on is always better. Just perhaps more costly if done by a charging third party.0 -
Thanks for that link.grumpycrab wrote: »
I'm not really sure what to do with that link as I can't follow that link and run a diagnostic test as I can't see anything on the monitor as its in power save mode.
The only others computer I have in the house is an ipad and the ipad isn't compatible with that diagnostic test.
I was going to ask anyway before this link came along about how can I learn to diagnose which component of isn't working as that's what the local pc guy would do. How do I learn that for myself? Is it a disc or a programme or a kit? Or is it this diagnostic link that I can't use at the mo but which i could use for a different fault if the monitor were working? TIA.0 -

What does that tell us?
Thnx.
Allows us to identify the components more accurately. But if you have someone locally, who you can trust, who can test the components for a reasonable price, then it's worth a thought.
You've given the Service Tag for a laptop.
A Dell Inspiron 6400.
Have you copied it correctly?0 -

Its on a paper label on the top & it looked like 8110 but perhaps the 0 is a Q?0 -
The guy has just called to say its a faulty agp slot and graphics card but that he's enabled the on board graphics which works fine. Not sure what that means. I'll find out more when I pick it up tomorrow.0
