    Hiya!

I'm 35 and currently owe just over £20k (or whatever is says in the signature). Six months ago (LBM) I owed nearly £27k, which is more than my annual salary. Thanks to this board, I've made huge improvements to my money management, and have reduced my original debt free date from 5 years to around 2 1/2 years. Love this site!!

Message for the original poster: don't feel ashamed about your debt - nobody here will judge you, only support you.

I will out do you all - I turned 50 this year  (in March) I have been in and out of debt since my 30's - my excuses were a divorce and bringing up a very young daughter unsupported by the ex.

Always seemed to be on the bread line and scrapping by, because I did temp work or part-time work so I was there when she was and worked whilst she was at school.

When my daughter left home to go to Uni - I realised that I was using the excuse of being a single parent to keep the debt cycle going. So this time I have decided that when I am debt free I will stay out of debt - I have cleared them twice before - so I know it can be done. I have learnt the hard way that I cannot 'just have a little bit of debt' - because that's how it snowballs into something worse and before you know it - you're not just back where you started - but in even deeper.

A bit like an alcholic - one drink and you're off the waggon...

gizfizz is right - this website is such a help - If I had a tool like this 20 years ago I am sure I would have broken the debt cycle and stayed clear of the temptations again, because of the support the site offers.

We are all here to help and support each other and because we know the dangers and stresses - its nice to have people to turn to for encouragement and advice.

  • I don't think that anybody in their twenty's should be ashamed of the debt they have, It's part of the learning experiences that come with life. This info isn't taught in schools & you've realised at a young enough age that it's holding you back & have decided to do something about it. You should be proud of realising so early.

Try being 45 year old with 70k of debt (excluding mortgage),
Now that's something to be ashamed of. Could make the excuse of trying to be the good father for the family, making sure they got what they wanted, but can't help but think it's purely down to bad money management. Hence I lurke & don't post here very often. Though like others it does help to know your not alone in the world.

Midlands Man: This info isn't taught in schools

I have been saying this for years : I sat my daughter down when she went to Uni and explained how credit cards worked and interest rates etc - She was never taught about mortgages or money management. It was only through my own bad money management that I learnt - sometimes you have to experience it and can only learn by your own mistakes, but as Midlands Man points out you have time on your side ;) and will have a wonderful debt free life at the end of it ;)
