I used to use prescription shampoo, Nizoral, T-Gel when I was a teenager but all only offered temporary relief.

Now its taken a few months but my scalp is much better.

I started with using Organic Surge, still have their conditioner left but Naturallythinking is cheaper so I switched to their shampoo (and shower gel).

I have used precription shampoo in the past also, but back then felt like they didn't make any difference. They might well be better now.

Please do not/ advocate use aqueous cream as any sort of leave on or lengthy treatment, it's no longer recommended for eczema or dermatitis, it contains sulphate surfactants! Please see a doctor and get a proper diagnosis/ treatment.

I'm waiting for an appointment on Thursday if you see further up. I've only used sls free shampoo on her hair twice since posting this. I was just interested what else was out there, as a doctor probably won't have time to mention every brand in a ten min appointment. Her scalp seems to be improving already with the shampoo alone, so hopefully whatever the doctor prescribes will clear it completely.

  • I cannot recommend MooGoo highly enough. My other half suffers from a dry, flaky, itchy scalp and ever since using MooGoo Shampoo, Conditioner and Scalp Cream it has improved his scalp condition dramatically. Best thing is that it's all natural.

MooGoo is an Australian brand and it's recently available in the UK- so glad for this!

Really odd that I've just spotted this thread as I'm having similar symptoms! I've also been struggling with a very itchy scalp. (no nits!)

I'm not 100% on what's caused it, but I do have a few theories and things to try so I thought I'd mention them in case they're of any use to anyone else.

I have had a blood test. I do have odd bloods but none which explain what's happening to my scalp, but an itchy scalp/skin can be a sign of a thyroid problem which can be resolved via pills so ask your GP for a blood test if your unsure.

Zinc deficiencies can also be a problem, zinc can be found in things like seafood/oysters, beef steak, veal, dark chocolate and wheat germ.

I read on a forum elsewhere that lemon juice is a good thing to try. Apply lemon juice, leave for a minute or two then rinse out.

Aloe is supposed to help as is camomile. Leave on overnight each night.

I've been trying a different shampoo. I was wondering if my scalp just decided it had had enough and started to itch. I don't seem to have a flaky scalp or dandruff (two different things by the way) so I think it's more of an irritation or reaction to something I'm putting on my scalp rather then it reacting to itself. (Just a logical guess-nothing to back this up). I'd been borrowing a shampoo for sensitive hair from a friend by Aveda which is just lots of natural stuff and things like aloe and rosemary and burdock, prior to this I'd been using a normal popular man-made/chemical version.

Another thought I had was that it could be some sort of hayfever. I don't have runny eyes or a runny nose yet but have been sneezing and had itchy eyes in the middle of the night a few times randomly. I normally have some sort of reaction to the season but have never had an itchy scalp but then again I never used to have hayfever until about 4 years ago...

I also wondered if it could be some sort of reaction to dairy. I have an intolerance and ate some not so long ago without realising (I lapsed) I continued for a while without realising and wonder if it had a reaction as there are links to this and eczema. I used to have eczema frequently until I chopped it out of my diet so it could be this.

I also wondered if it was heat related. I've been using hit hair driers. I have been using hot hair driers for a few years now (at the gym) but just wondered if my tolerance had built up psychologically but not physically and I could have burnt my scalp. So using a cooler setting for a few weeks to see if things heal and feel better again.

And one last thought: stress. I have a lot going on at the moment, this could be a reaction to stress- I've never had an itchy scalp as a reaction like this before but things change, it could be stress.
  • hi, lush do a solid shampoo bar called soak n float which contains cade oil and is very effective in dealing with psoriasis and eczema of the scalp, and also great for getting rid of dry, flaky skin too. it costs £5.25 and lasts for about 80 wahes. hth.

I've tried so many products both over the counter & also on prescription for my really bad psoriasis of the scalp (due to beta blockers).

I've bought some of this today & used it for the first time, boy you don't need a lot do you! Reading reviews, a lot are put off by the smell but its nothing compared to some things I've tried. In fact I actually like it. I'm really hoping this helps. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)

For me the only thing that worked was E45 Shampoo (I suffer from scalp psoriasis and very dry skin everywhere else!)

    http://www.boots.com/en/E45-Dermatological-Dry-Scalp-Shampoo-200ml_867585/

I've tried many of the others i.e. T-Gel etc but this was the only one that worked.
