I live in warwickshire - last year I had horrendous problems with our post. Missing credit card statements, delayed/missing bank statements, missing books, CD's, DVD's ordered via the internet. One time I ordered 4 DVD's from Play.com in one order, all of which they posted in separate packages NONE OF WHICH reached me (play.com replaced without a problem but even though I knew I hadn't received them I could see how it would look fishy that I was saying 4 out of 4 didn't arrive!). I complained time after time, I involved postwatch, I contacted my MP, nothing changed.

Eventually, after nearly a year of complaining, the refuse collection team handed in a sack full of rubbish which had been left out for them, which was split, and which contained dozens of undelivered letters. Turns out the local postman had been stealing mail for months and months and months. Sack fulls of undelivered mail was found in his shed, house, buried in his garden - you name it, he had hidden undelivered post in it. He admitted in court that he had sold/kept items of use to him such as DVD's and CD's - and showed no remorse whatsoever.

He went to jail for a paltry 3 months, Royal mail allowed him to hand in his notice - so he didn't even have to suffer the indignity of being dismissed. Meanwhile, because the post that was found was mostly damp and mouldy it was impossible to trace who most of it belonged to. At no point did Royal Mail show any signs of giving a damn. They STILL do not accept that my missing mail was in anyway their fault - even though they failed to follow up any of my complaints, or those made by masses of others in our town that I heard about later.....the thieving b*****d would still be helping himself now if the binmen hadn't reported their "find"!

Oh yes - and to add insult to injury, one of the RM customer service staff expected me to be grateful that the postman in question hadn't used my mail to commit ID theft..............

    Appalling or what?

I moved to a new build flat, and even though this block of flats is the only 3 storey new development on a very small street (all other houses are terrace and look the same!! i.e. you'd have to be blind not to find it), we've had 8 items of post go missing in a space of 10 days (council tax bill, credit card bill, post forwarded from my parents house, a small parcel, my driving license etc...)

I've emailed them twice in the last 3 weeks via their customer complaint thing online (exactly what they tell you to do) and have had NO response apart from their automated reply which was no use whatsoever.

I also sent a card 1st class to my sick grandma, which took 10 DAYS to arrive!!

they are SO useless, it's not even funny anymore!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Trouble is for every 5 honest posties, there are 5 dishonest. So I would take it as a hearted apology to half of the poststaff.

Agreed, no industry is safe from theft or crime, but there still is that percentage now isnt there, so I have no regrets about saying it, the fact is its true. RM employ a vast percentage of Temp staff within the sorting offices, some not even legal UK citizens, a majority who cannot be traced if they decide its rich pickings to go through parcels and packages. Dispatches covered this on one of their programs, along with the amount of mail STOLEN by RM staff. Unfortunatley, it goes on, and until RM can sort out the good from the bad in their staffing policies, Mud sticks. And if you knew where I lived, that mud will still stick, and the only regrets I would have, is that its still going on within the RM.

  • I've seen the good and bad. One postie (when there were still 2 deliveries a day) used to do half his round, go to his girlfriends for breakfast and leave the rest of the mail there, go back to the sorting office, get the second post and then go back to G/f, pick up the second half of his round and deliver that. Nobody on his round ever got 2 posts as half the mail was usually at the girlfriends. Dad had long been suspicious about the service we were recieving and actually drank in the same pub as the postie, overheard him bragging to his mates about his little dodge. Did RM care? Not one bit.

Then I lived on an estate, mostly got good service but it was one of those areas where they employed lots of foriegn staff who didn't read very well in English! OK when regular postie was on but when he was on holiday we would recieve either no mail or mail for every road on the round where there was a house numbered 51! A week later all our mail would arrive, having address circled by the people who had had it mis delivered and had popped it back in the box.

As for now, live in the country and fantastic service. Postman comes in van, parks in our driveway and delivers to us or next door. Parcels left on step (can't be seen from outside - nodbody walks past anyway) and if it needs signing for, he scribbles the signature, pops a card through and then goes through our side gate and leaves item in the shed. NEVER have to go to the sorting office to pick up mail (well its flamin miles away!)

Oh and I just stamp up outgoing mail and leave it on the step, he picks it up and takes it back to the sorting office. Between him and buying your own postage on line I'm a very happy bunny.

I can't tell what you mean by this - are you saying that you would tamper with the post of someone expressing such an opinion - or just tamper with ther person?! Either way, I think veiled threats like this may be why the postal service has a bad reputation.

I have fallen out with Royal Mail a number of times over missing mail. I got some free stamps though in compensation! Didn't really make up for my son not getting any of his birthday cards, bar one, delivered.

The postie we have now is very good, but still manages, sometimes, to put the wrong mail in the wrong place, but generally I think that is down to volume of mail and a genuine error. I am slightly concenred though that he leaves stuff behind the door, and it will say on it, "signed for by postman". So he is signing for me stuff that he is delivering. A bit odd.

I'm sorry but no matter how upset you are about a post on here, you can't say something like that. That in itself is giving postmen/women a bad reputation! Just think about how that came across, I wouldn't even want to bump into you in the street!!

Anyways, my theory on Royal Mail is, they do a pretty good job when you think about how many letters and parcels they sort out and deliver every single day - millions and millions. With such high numbers there are bound to be problems, and there are bound to be some unhappy customers. I had to make a claim for a missing parcel and it took them almost 6 months to send me my cheque! But I do have a lot of respect for RM as like I said I think they have a huge job on their hands and the majority of people do get their post every day with no problems.

Remember that RM are still making huge losses every day too - which is not good for any company!
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)
