Family and rent

Just wondering how much people charge their kids once parents stop claiming benefits for their children, but their children don't leave home.
I have 3 still at home aged 18, 21 and 27, the 21 and 27year olds have full time jobs and my 18 yr old works part time.
My husband works all the hours god sends to support the family and pay the bills.

I used to pay £20 per week. It's not a lot but it covered the electric and gas and I was only home to sleep
My sister has never contributed and she is 22!0 -
It's not "rent", it's called "board(and lodgings)".
What you choose to charge them "depends".Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -
Sell house, move, don't tell kids where. Don't sound like they care much about you....
Sadly their attitudes may be permanently ingrained if they've been allowed to get away with it selfishly for many years.
Cheers!0 -
Used to call it hose keeping.
£5/week was all my mum took off me.....32 years ago.0 -
When I was working full-time I paid £150 a month to live with my parents (I think) But I did stop once I went to Uni.
It's what you can work out, how much are your utilities and food bills? Divide it between all of you - could that be your figure?0 -
Get a large piece of paper and write down .... BIG .... what the monthly bills cost, the bills that your husband/their dad is working so hard for ....
Gas - electric - water - food - sky tv and so on, only you know what these are
Divide by 5 and ask for their contributions, or maybe they would like to find another house to live where everything's free....
If your kids are old enough to work they are old enough to contribute towards the household bills. My 3 are 8, 5 and 2 but they have it ingrained that everything costs money!"Put the kettle on Turkish, lets have a nice cup of tea.....no sugars for me.....I'm sweet enough"0 -
My mum and dad never asked for any money off us three kids, I didn't leave til I was about 23/24. We all, however, put money on the gas and electric whenever it was getting low and we all (out of choice) bought most of our own food. So I suppose it was a compromise.
But, 27 is quite old to be still at home. Have they offered anything? You might want to tell them to have a look on right move and uswitch and see how much things cost so they realise how good they have it! Maybe ask them to contribute, perhaps not with a figure in mind though, let them choose the amount and it will let them feel like their choiceRubbish at the grocery challenge!0 -

Mine gives me aroud 20/25 a week to cover petrol for all the driving round I do for her and electric and gas etc and she gets some of her own food and most household cleaning stuff, but she also lived away from home for a year before her health got to stage that it was no longer an option so learnt the true cost of living.
When I first left home nearly 34 years ago I blew a whole 20 on groceries most of which I ended up throwing a way as was clueless, the first time I had to wash my own clothes I stood in kitchen reading every label testing water and washed by hand ................jeez! I soon learnt.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
When I first left school I went onto a YTS (28 years ago) was on £25/week, gave my mum £10, left me with £15 for travel exp, saving and myself
Ive worked out the utility bills, tv, water, council tax, food etc and when divided by 5 its coming to £150.00 approx, ATM the 2 eldest give me £36/week roughly the youngest doesn't pay. I think ive been too soft, as the 27 year old moved out for 4 years, and came back last Feb for 6 months and is still here 14 months later.

The thing that gets to me is, they are out most nights in the pub, and spending their money as if its going out of fashion. I don't begrudge them having a life, but the 21 yo has a daughter who also stays her at weekends, and his girlfriend is here 6 out of 7 evenings staying over 2 nights per week!
I learned the hard way, married at 17 and 4 children by the time I was 25, but I appreciate and respect money.0
