Watching BBC Iplayer abroad

Options
I will be spending a month or so abroad, while recovering from an operation, and was wondering how I could access BBC iplayer contents whilst abroad.

A paid for or free VPN service would sort it

    I use Witopia @ $5.99/month

Theres also a dongle and software called surfeasy. Never used it and reviews are patchy, but it may be worth a look.

Maybe, but the quality of the BBC is insurmountable. Still the envy of Europe

If you download, install and run SafeIP you can select the United Kingdom as your IP location and then surf the Internet as though you were in the UK - www.freesafeip.com

The basic version is free and you just install and run it, double-click on the country you want from the list - USA, UK, Poland, Germany or France and within seconds it shows your new IP address and the country.

It's a stand-alone program which you run as required and when you close it it reverts back to your IP address.

I've just tried freesafeip and it doesn't seem to work for me, tired watching Modern Family but got the usual, it appears you are outside the USA.

I tried also and got the same message. I messed about for about an hour and occasionally got the message "There is a problem communicating with the SafeIP server". It was also painfully slow loading web pages. I looked on SafeIP web site and it suggested "go to your web browser settings, clear your browser's cache, then try visiting the blocked site. The website should now be unblocked" - it worked and pages loaded reasonably fast.

Not sure if it was a problem with their servers or clearing the cache which solved the problem but I could watch Modern Family at http://abc.go.com/watch/modern-family/SH559066/VDKA0_rn6zov7g/flip-flop

In SafeIP I selected the 2nd Los Angeles, California which gave an IP address of 192.69.222.162

If it still doesn't work try contacting SafeIP at www.freesafeip.com/contact

Many thanks for the reply Alan.

I will give it a go at some stage and see what happens.

My internet wasn't working very well either last night so maybe that had something to do with it as well.

I tried some free proxy/VPN's before but eventually settled for using Witopia VPN and it's been reliable for the 3 years I have used it (daily).

$50 to $80 a year plus it is secure connection
