Tenth Anniversary Combo Breaker Savvy Shopper!
Meh, I'm 24 with no NCD and I got insured on a 1998 Fiesta for under £700

Try adding good drivers to your policy. I have my mum and her boyfriend on mine because chances are they might need to drive it. (example: I share a drive so if I'm away and my neighbour needs to use the space I'm in to get his caravan out I can just get one of them to move it)

It lowered my insurance considerably! Just make sure you're the main driver otherwise it's illegal.

Oh and I paid it all up front which shaved £300 off the price! My overdraft is free up to £500 so I may as well use it to make such a large saving :)

    I'm with Admiral btw.

    Hi Charlie

Agree with most of the other folks on here.

Go for something Japanese or German for reliability if poss. I bought my mum a P reg Civic for about £1500 in 2005, she has hardly spent anything on it over the years other than tyres and MOT's and sold it a few months ago for £500. Bargain.

Alternately go for Ford or Vauxhall for cheap parts and that most garages can fix them. Avoid anything French or Italian.

Just had a quick look on Autotrader and found a nice little Suzuki Swift and VW golf near you. Golf is a 1.4 for £990 and Suzuki is a 1.0 with 72k for £795, both with long MOT's and tax.

Whatever you go for have a good test drive and get an insurance quote first. Also worth bearing in mind that road tax changed in 2001. Anything before March 2001 is based on engine size (Smaller or larger than 1.5), anything after this date its based on Co2 emmissiions. There are some real shockers out there that can sting you so worth checking.

    Hope that helps
  • The last car I had in my own name and insured was nearly 5 years ago.

Since then I've only driven the odd Hire car/van.

doesnt need to be a small car, check out the "undesirable" cars for your generation (cant believe I'm about to mention these 2 vehicles...) like the mondeo, or octavia or an accord. You could be shocked at how cheap they are to insure, and they are well put together cars.

As you build up no claims your insurance should get cheaper, and you wont buy a car every year, your train ticket will only grow more expensive, so i would argue that long term the car could work out a better deal
