Do you happen to know if this applies to First Direct cards too as I hope to be driving this year and there's a petrol station near me (owned by one of the large supermarkets) that does not do realtime authorisation and is pay at pump only and my FD debit card is prefix 46 but has the Visa rather than Visa debit symbol.

They tend to have lower fuel prices which is why I want to go there.

Yep I've seen that from the link, however I also have one of their credit cards which has a prefix 454361 that Wikipedia article identifies as an FD Debit card so I would call into question it's accuracy (as I would much info held on Wikipedia for that matter)

I was therefore seeking the advice of any genuinely knowledgeable people on here who might know if debit cards with the 4659 prefix were set as full auth (my debit card prefix is 4659 46)

I wanted to ask here first before asking the bank as knowledge is power and all that but I have now sent a secure message to FD to ask.

As far as I know if you have a first direct debit card it is an offline version.. First Direct are very picky about there customers so if you have an account and there overdraft on it then they will trust you with an offline card.

Its digits 5 & 6 that define auth all or not.

In FD's case I have been advised that 4659 47 is auth all. 4659 46 is the standard debit card.
    As to the 4543....
That is their credit card prefix :rotfl:

Also Direct from HSBC (sent a message to them).
The basic acc debit cards are NOT contactless.

Just out of interest I thought I'd add this.

Appears FD's card services is outsourced to India and I got the response that there are no blocks on your account so if it doesn't work it could indicate machine or link failure.

As it happened my Mum gave me a lift to work this morning and we passed an ASDA pay at pump and noticed the unleaded price was quite a few pence cheaper but as she doesn't like overdrafts and got rid of her credit cards some time ago she just has a basic RBS account and has tried to full up there before and has been declined, RBS told her the reason for this was because her debit card was auth all.

Anyway I normally send her a bit of dosh each week to help with petrol but thought I might be able to save her a few quid by going with her on a Friday when she normally fills up and use my debit card instead.

I rang FD this evening out of interest, explained what she had been told by RBS and asked whether I would experience any similar problems.

The person seemed to give an answer a politician would be proud of 'you shouldn't do' is all she would say.

Did I just do the banking equivalent of asking for the nuclear launch codes?

    Like most of HSBC then.

I opened a savings account with M&S Bank last year and as I have so many passwords to remember for both personal and stuff at work I forgot the password for password for the online service.

I rang up and endured 15 minutes of trying to explain to the person that I was trying to reset the password for the account and them both misunderstanding me and me misunderstanding them.

In the end I gave up and wrote in asking to close the account, explaining why.

Don't misunderstand what I'm saying here, it must be as frustrating trying to understand a Brit with a strong accent as it is for the Brit to understand a strong Indian dialect.

So why don't banks do everyone a favour and allow customers to be served by local folks?

Well HSBC is your best choice as they have departments scattered all round the UK.

Personally as a FD customer and of many other banks. I am far happier to talk to our Indian cousins. Than I am any Scotch, Irish or Gordie based call center.
