All mostly all HSBC ones start 4659 its the 2 numbers that come after that tell it whether its an online or ofline card.

Whats the two numbers after it?

No idea about the last two but it's definitely made of plastic and is a rounded rectangle shape.

Do you happen to know if this applies to First Direct cards too as I hope to be driving this year and there's a petrol station near me (owned by one of the large supermarkets) that does not do realtime authorisation and is pay at pump only and my FD debit card is prefix 46 but has the Visa rather than Visa debit symbol.

They tend to have lower fuel prices which is why I want to go there.

Have you tried asking First Direct?

All HSBC/FD debit cards start with 46, offline or online. Most UK Visa Debit cards do, actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Issuer_Identification_Numbers#Visa_.2846.2A.2A.2A.2A.29

I will when the time comes for me to need it JJ, as a person that seemed to be 'in the know' about such things responded to this thread I thought I might just add to the thread.

As for the other stuff that people have mentioned on this thread a debit card could be green with pink polka dots for all I care so long as it allows me to pay for stuff.

    :)
