I wonder if it will have BASIC written in large text like the RBS / NatWest debit cards.

My HSBC debit card on a standard account is contactless and so is the M&S bank debit card. Where I live I have a bus pass which is scanned by bus driver's machine. However I have to take my HSBC card out of my purse as it stops my bus pass from working!

My local co-op now accept contactless cards, but have not found that many retailers that do up to now. Think McDonald's do? Plus some M&S stores.

I thought cards branded visa debit were full authorisation cards and those branded visa had chips that could authorise transactions offline?

Nope there are Visa debit cards that are offline too, these ones you can use at places that don't always have access to online terminals. Such as planes, trains and ships.

If you have a basic account then you can 9 times out of 10 these are strictly online cards online. If they can't get authorisation then the transaction will be declined.

Just to confuse things though there are exceptions - my Barclays Visa Debit on a cash card account will work on trains. I'm just in the process of applying for an HSBC basic account - OH has a full current account with them and his card has just expired. The card that replaced it is a contactless one- I'm a bit jealous that he has two debit cards with 2 current accounts (different banks) and both are contactless - I have 4 debit cards from 4 banks and none are!

Might it be that some trains can authorise transactions over a wi-fi connection?

Why would you care if you have Contactless cards or not they are useless.I have contactless on 3 current accounts and used contactless twice at McDonalds.

Try not to get to excited on something that's a waste of time.

You might not care and and you might think there useless but others don't.

I like the fact that it confuses sales assistants at places i've used it at they look shocked and wonder what has happened. There are a few more places than McDonalds it can be used at.

Maybe you'd like to share your experiences and how Contactless cards has changed your way of paying, apart from confusing sales assistants which I'm sure wasn't the purpose of these.

We all have an Opinion and for these I find them a total waste of time.

It is a much faster way of paying in Mc Donalds. My waist line proves this.
