Pets in rented property

Trying to move for a new job at the moment.

Rang around half a dozen EA this morning to be told no pets.... I only have one cat and he doesn't spray/sleeps 23 hours a day.

You would think landlords didn't want to let out their properties.

You just need to keep on enquiring.

Have you told the LAs that it is a cat that you are talking about? Often dogs are more of a problem.

    Some suggestions:

Ask them to check with landlord re: cat - some LAs just make general statements.
    Offer a larger deposit
Offer to have it professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy

To be honest we didn't mention our cat until we had seen the property, the LAs had met us and knew our work history/financial situation. It seemed then to be less of a problem. They even let us install a cat flap on the proviso we reinstated the door back to the original state.

So, don't say anything until you have met up, informed them of your 'status' and seen a few properties, then ask and if it's a 'no' go for the other suggestions.

    Hi,

We have two dogs and have also found this to be an issue. I've found that either going through a private landlord or asking the agent to specifically ask the landlord and perhaps offer to pay a bigger deposit in case of pet damage does make them more open to the idea of pets.

Good luck, hope you find somewhere soon.

    Thanks,

Some good suggestions, I actually havn't told my current LL about our cat and we have 3 monthly inspections.... the toys/bowl/bed/scratchpost all go in the boot of the car and the cat goes for a walk... they have never mentioned anything.

When I speak to the EA they seem more concerned whether I am in full time work or not or if I have kids. Hard to believe they can be so picky.

I might just do the viewings then make an offer then wait until the go ahead is given before i mention the cat.

If your current landlord doesn't know, bang goes the suggestion of getting a reference from your existing landlord stating that you have kept a pet in the property and no damage has resulted due to the pet.

Are you looking at houses or flats? Many flats are prevented from having pets in the lease and therefore it's not the landlord's choice.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

Sorry to sound blunt, but you need to lose that cat if you want some choice in renting. With so many tenants chasing so few properties, landlords are going to choose tenants least likely to damage or leave an odour in their investment.

Detached house, I can see from a couple of them on rightmove that they even have cat flaps.

    just don't mention it.

Tempted to do this but my partner and I are both working and when it comes to inspections it can be difficult/annoying to hide evidence.

I know exactly where you are coming from, but he is part of the family, couldn't get rid of the little fella.

And put the kids in care and laser the tattoos... dont forget the elocution lessons for non-estuary accents.... a balaclava and gloves to hide the skin colour...
