This isn't a remotely quick fix but I have a bit of a thing for picking up coins - if I go out, I usually find something, even if it's just 1p. Since the start of the year I have found almost £16 in loose change on the floor. I put it all in a separate jar and then, if I get to a point where I am really stuck, I can dip into it. When you go to the supermarket, start looking around on the floor by the tills. 70% of the time you will find a coin or two. Also look around parking ticket machines. in the last year I've even found 2 fivers in the town centre! I am definitely not too proud to stop an pick up a penny though! :) Best of luck to you.

I'm following this thread with interest :-)
My husband has had his hours/wages drastically cut at work and we are going to struggle as, I'm sure lots of people do, we had been living somewhat up to our means.

I've done a budget and we are around £126 per month short :-( I've reduced the bradband/phone package by £10 a month and reduced the CC payment. I'm currently looking for a job, but with a husband who works full time and 3 children it's quite difficult.

I've shopped at Aldi sporadically over the last few months, but will bw going there every week now. There is a £5 off £40 voucher in tomorrows Daily Mirror, so I'll be buying 2 papers and doing my weekly shop a day earlier next week so I can use 2 within the valid dates.

Reading about the jewellery has reminded about a ring I have which I haven't worn for about 15 years. I think I'll go and weigh it in when I'm next in town. My engagement ring is in my purse as I was going to take it in to be cleaned, but I don't think I can part with that just yet :o

  • I bought ds1 some 'cool' shoes last year and they lasted less than a term! I kid you not! Don't get them! (Unless of course your kids are better with shoes than mine are lol) After that I marched him to brantano and demanded he choose a pair of clarks or hush puppies LOL was quite funny, we spent half hour arguing before he gave in and got them! Luckily for me he's stopped growing for the moment (he was in a size 9 by 13 yrs old  ) and the sizes 9 still fits and they were definitely worth the £60 as I got them re-heeled/soled and they are as good as new ;) lucky him!

pink pig thanks for the tip about DM voucher, I will be sure to pop and get a few of those myself :)

  • Hi HOK3Y, I always pick up pennies off the floor, never too proud :D.

Pinkpig08 - thanks for the heads up on the voucher, will send hubby for the paper tomorrow.

DFW - DD went through 3 pairs of the same shoes last year, partly wear partly feet growing, so £45 for a years worth of school shoes, I'm happy with that and DD is happy as she likes the shoes, have to say I remember my mum making me wear a pair of shoes for school I hated, because she got them in the sale cheap, I cried and cried and was made fun of by others at school but still had to wear them, I swore I would never do that to my kids. DS couldn't care less what were on his feet, or what he wears full stop, spends most of his life filthy and looking like a Victorian street child :rotfl:

PinkPig, I rounded up all my old jewellery and took it into a good jewellers in town who buys gold. I had all kinds of crappy bits and bobs that I would never wear again and I'd let the sentiment go a long time ago. Walked out with £180. I'd have done it a long time ago if I'd known those pennies were sitting in my jewellery box! No point having it if it never sees the light of day!

I'm with you DFW - DD is the same. I did buy her a pair of cheap shoes as a stop gap one year when she had outgrown her expensive pair 6 weeks before end of term. Within 2 weeks they were ruined and that was £12 down the drain.
In the end we got her another expensive pair which she then wore the following term as well.

I love Brantano - what they have is all you can have within my remit :rotfl:. DD thinks she needs pumps, sparkles, anything inappropriate really and I always do the talk about how they won't be suitable in the winter and blah blah blah :rotfl:
She knows she has to pick from a selection that we deem acceptable although our problem is that she has quite wide feet so sometimes only 1 pair out of hunderds actually fit her. Now she is a 3 we can sneak across to the ladies section and see if any there grab her interest although she still wants heels and sparkles:rotfl:

My DS on the other hand does not care what he looks like but we have the opposite problem - he is a Size 10 now but with very narrow feet so again not many actually fit him
He is going into college now so we don't have to worry so much.
  • Day before payday, but won't be a NSD as I'm going to buy the daily mirror for the aldi voucher.

Today's tea will be pasta bake using all the odds left in the fridge and left over rst chicken from last night tea, going to make scones as we have cream to use and can have cream scones this afternoon.

Hubby has had a couple of days off work and is doing an amazing job in the garden, he has removed an old shed and is building a new one from scratch, no shop bought ones here. He is an absolute superstar :heart2:. Don't think he will get much done today as it is raining and is talking of fishing (think he deserves a day off).

    Take care PWPS.x.
  • Just spent last 20 mins listing bits on ebay, but not for me for DD, she has decided she wants a pair of red Doc Martin boots .

What happened to my little girl that wore pretty party dresses and pink sparkly shoes:(

Told her I can't afford them and if she wants them she will need to save for them, anyway good on her she has sorted out some of her stuff to sell. Its a good learning curve for her and she will appreciate them more and hopefully look after them if she has had to save for them herself.
  • Good on your DD. We've been really quite hard on DS1 and DS2 with regards to money, (so do not want them to make the same mistakes we did), DS1 has been quite good with money and DS2 is learning. He went a theme park last week and had saved his pocket money for his ticket as I said we couldn't afford it. But its tough at times.:( xx

  • Thanks Alice, she was really good about it bless her, I will probably give her some money towards them as I would have had to get her some new boots for winter anyway, but not going to tell her this. Going to see how well she can do off her own back, if she manages to sell whats been listed she will make around £20, so a good start, also explained to her about fees etc to be paid and she was fine about it, she is growing up so fast and although she has her moments is becoming a lovely grounded young lady.
