Amsterdam

Sex, drugs, tulips and clogs...

I'm sure there is more to Amsterdam than that. I'm going to go there in person and find out except that I have no plan as to what to do there yet.

Does anyone know anywhere cool to visit that does not, and I repeat DOES NOT involve smoking cafes or prostitutes?

We will be limited to only a couple of days so I want to make the most of the place while I can. Don't know when or if I'll get the chance to go again.

there is some beautiful architecture in amsterdam if you like that sort of thing. Grab yourself a copy of the Gold guide to amsterdam or something like that - we bought ours from a tourist information there - my copy has been lent to a friend so I can't be more helpful than that. Anyway it's a series of themed walks - histroy, red light district, shopping - that kind of thing. Each walk takes about three hours if you take it nice and slowly. I did a couple of these with a 10yo and managed to keep well away from sex and drugs :)There is so much more to amsterdam, the beautiful canals, the art galleries, the history, diamond district - have fun :)
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

Do go on a canal boat trip, definetly worth it.
I second the Van Gogh Museum.
Just strolling through the streets and along the canals is great, it's a lovely city!

Go on two canal boat trips, one by day and one by night. They are totally different experiences. (The evening 'pizza cruise' is very good value and great fun). We like the Van Gogh museum, NEMO, the floating flower market, the Albert Cuyp Market, the shopping off Dam square and just wandering around the back-streets and canals taking in the sights. The Anne Frank house is a must. It's an unbelievably moving experience visiting the place. I almost cried at least twice.

I've been to Amsterdam many times on one-day visits due to work, and I never got bored. There's so much to see and do, and just having a walk along the canal or visiting the many shops is quite entertaining. The there are the museums and, as has been said already, the Anne Frank house, which I have not had the chance to see myself yet.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I went last summer and only passed by the red light district briefly and by accident -not my cup of tea either.

The canal boat tours are lovely. We did a 90 min tour without food - better meals than those served on board can be bought cheaply at the many restaurants- and we wanted to focus on the sightseeing. Queue early and bag an outdoor seat if you can. Most of the boats serve wine and beer so you can have a tipple as you travel.

The Anne Frank House was very moving. Be aware that as it is a house you are going to see, the long queues take place out in the street. You'll need to go to the loo in advance (sorry!) and wear sunscreen/carry an umbrella/raincoat as the weather dictates and be prepared to wait for an hour or more outdoors in the queue. But once indoors it's well worth it. The house tour isvery moving and it ends with an opportunity to visit an interactive museum with coffee and book shops.

The big park (can't remember the name) is fab for an afternoon of downtime. Lots of cafes, licensed bars and open air entertainment.

Shopping wasn't fab as cities go, but lots of little shops to potter in along liedesplein (sp?)

Flower market great. Also a flea market had some lovely stuff and loads of antique shops in the back streets.

Agree with poster above who said just take time to wander, pref away from main streets and just enjoy the pretty architecture and canals.
