Thanks for all the ideas, muchly appreciated.

We'll be spending as much time out and about as possible. We checked out some reviews of where we are staying yesterday and it appears to be the worst place to stay in all of Amsterdam. The hostel even claims that in it's advertising  And no, I wasn't the person to book it

There's some good advice on Amsterdam (and lots of other cities) on here.
There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

A few suggestions about what to do:

How about a ‘Wetland Safari’ ie a canoe tour of the canals outside of Amsterdam:

Alternatively how about a bike tour:

    or a walking tour:

I didn’t fancy spending any time in the red light district but I found this was an entertaining and informative tour:

Otherwise have a look here for more info:

I went back in March with my other half; things we did:

    - Van Gogh Museum
    - Reijksmuseum (I preferred the VG)
    - Anne Frank House
    - wandered around
    - Ate (recommendations: Cinema Paradiso for their pizzas and sgroppino, De Bolhoed for veggie/vegan, Sama Sebo for Indonesian)

I'd like to go back; hopefully we'll get to include NEMO next time!
