    She paid her taxes for over 60 years dont you think the little she has saved can go where she would like it to go.

    from here;

    http://www.ageuk.org.uk/Documents/EN-GB/Factsheets/FS10_Paying_for_permanent_residential_care_fcs.pdf?dtrk=true
    You should not have to make any contribution from your capital below £14,250, but you will still be expected to contribute from your income.

    So there is no problem if your MIL only has between £10k and £15k savings.

    However the point is that if you can afford to pay for your own care then you should be doing so. At least that way you will have the choice of care homes as opposed to being put wherever the council chooses.

    Which is why me and hubby will be blowing the lot in our latter years to stop this from happening as we have no kids to leave it to anyway. I'll be blowing the lot in my 70's so if and when that day comes when I would have to go into care, there will be nothing left!

    When you have worked 60 years then come back to me with "us taxpayers" we are supposed to live in a free democracy, its Daily Mail readers such as you that create this "us" and "them" society.

    She can do whatever she likes with the money - she can pile it up and set fire to it if she wants. What she can't do is expect the government to pay for her care afterward. Governments have to be responsible with public funds, so they have rules about who gets money. Simple as that.

    Then you take the chance of being dumped in some poor care home as opposed to making your own choice.
  • I agree with your point about being able to afford good care if you can afford it....why not.
    If she had a 200,000 pound house to sell aswell as her savings, then it would go towards a good care home, however 10.000K will last about a year and then what, into a council run place with no money left to pass on.

    For the umpteenth time, capital (savings or otherwise) of less than £14,250 will be disregarded and will not be taken. Unless your MIL has income that will pay for her fees, it will be a council run home anyway.

    What happens if you live into your 90s without needing care?

    I think you mean we - taxpayers - will grab it. Where do you think Social Services money comes from? Idiot Cameron talks of there being no money tree. You clearly think there is!

    Well, your mother certainly can use HER money as she wants. She can have a big party in her birthday. What she should not do is to hide her money with you or your children, on the other hand to claim state benefitssss!

    Presumably the money already stashed in your wife's ISAs is not going to be declared - so you're already planning to commit fraud.
