Been scammed on Ebay and can't do anything about it

Hi I have broken all Ebays rules and emailed a games code to a buyer. I have done this a few times before, for small amounts, but this code was worth £30.
The code was bought by someone in Germany and after payment, as agreed, I emailed the code to them.
I used their paypal account email address.
I have received an email, from the 'buyer' via Ebay, to say that they did not authorise the purchase of the code and want a refund.
They claim not to have received the code even though it was sent to their paypal adress....
I find it difficult to understand how an Ebay account and a Paypal account and an email address have been hacked all at the same time.
I have received an email from Paypal today :-
Dear xxxxxxx,
Recently we notified you that an unauthorised activityclaim had been filed against a transaction you received. You have four morecalendar days to respond to our request for additional information. After that,we will continue our investigation without your input.
Is there anything I can say in my defence?

Just some thoughts from reading this:
Do you know if the gaming code has been used? If the transaction is cancelled/refunded could the code still be used or could you contact the games company and ask them to suspend it?
Could it be in the "buyer's" junk email folder?
Do you have delivery/read receipts for your emails? Is it still in your sent items folder?0 -
Or the buyer knows what he/she is doing to scam someone using the rules of PayPal.0

Chalk it up to experience and move on0

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have no idea if the code has been used. The only way of knowing for sure is if DS2 input the code to see if it still worked, then he wouldn't be able to sell it after that.
I have no idea what delivery/read receipts are..(I wish I had used them though)
I broke the rules, I am pretty sure that the buyer is aware and is using that to his advantage.
The emails that the buyer has sent are in capital letters with lots of exclamation marks. I have asked polite questions but they have been ignored, I keep receiving the same type of email demanding their money back.
Yep, I will chalk it up to experience
thanks

Are codes banned on ebay?0 -
If it's unauthorised can't you just post an empty envelope and then upload proof of posting?0

Whilst I have to admit that this whole thing sounds dodgy and probably a scam, I was unfortunate enough to wake up one morning last year and find that my ebay, PayPal, amazon and two hotmail accounts had all been hacked simultaneously...all the passwords had been changed to all the accounts so I couldn't get into them. The only way I found out what was going on was because I have the PayPal app on my iPhone which I can log into with a mobile number and pin code. I had a paypal alert on my phone when I woke up that morning saying 'You have sent a payment of £2600 to xxxxxx'....panic immediately set in and when I logged into the Paypal app, there were two ebay transactions, one for £2600 for a MacBook and another for £1300 for a solid gold necklace!
I couldn't get into ebay because my password had been changed by the hacker so had to wait until the eBay call centre opened. I phoned PayPal who I have to admit we're really helpful and immediately blocked my account and ebay were also good and they cancelled the fraudulent transactions immediately - the hacker was trying to put another hugely expensive transaction through at the time I was actually on the phone to eBay!
When I finally got all my accounts sorted and passwords changed etc, there were messages in my ebay account that the hacker had sent to sellers asking if they could come and pick up the items that morning as they were in the area....all signed off with my name as if it was me!
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is possible for all accounts to get hacked at the same time but the fact that the buyer is contacting you asking for his money back seems a bit odd....I had no contact with any of the sellers that received fraudulent payments from my PayPal account, it was all dealt with by PayPal.
Hope this helps.0 -

Sounds to me like one email account got hacked and it led to the others being accessed by password reset links being sent to the compromised email account.
I dount anyone would specifically pick you at random to monitor and hack all your accounts when they could just hack one and access everything.0
