ah ok, so my theory was way off mark :rotfl:

Personally I think they look daft and just add more unnecessary clutter to the side panel.

Agreed. Perhaps they've offered 'Badger' a productivity bonus!

Forgetting the fact that so far no everyone has been awarded their badges, the awards seem to be easily attainable

    You are awarded badges for
    First post
    10 posts
    100 posts
    500 posts
    1000 posts
    10000 posts

At that rate, the world and his wife will have almost a full set!

I'd have set the bar at

    100 posts
    500 posts
    1000 posts
    2500 posts
    5000 posts
    10000 posts
    25000 posts
    50000 posts
    100000 posts

And I'd have different colours for each level to make it look a bit more interesting

I noticed the new post badges today and came here to see if there was a reason that some people have them but not others. It seems totally random.

    Ditto on Gigervamp's post.

I don't feel the 'what are these' link is particularly clear in terms of how you get awarded these (application or luck that someone sees your post).

Can't help thinking these new ones for numbers of posts look like butter or margarine tub lids!

personally I think it is just a glitch that Towers hasn't noticed yet, the techies have [STRIKE]probably been tinkering with[/STRIKE] broken something.
I fixed that for you :D

Time for me to get some badges, I think ...

I've been Money Tipped - not sure I can find the thread, it was at least six years ago. Will start looking. eta Found it - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=21518359&postcount=1

Intrepid Forum Explorer - how do I evidence that I've saved money on 25 boards? I'm sure I've posted on at least that many of the boards of MSE ... but maybe not saved money on all of them!

PPI Party Pooper - (please note post will be edited for privacy once badge awarded)

    Uniform Washer - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=10326281&postcount=248

Savvy Shopper - give me time, I'll find something!

And then there's the small matter of my first post, my 100th post, my 1000th post etc.

I just spotted half a dozen images down below my username and avatar.

As I'm usually reading the forum on a tablet or phone using a browser with images off, I didn't know at first what they are. Maybe some kind of badges, so I checked, and yes, half a dozen of them for post count, in a random order, and so small you can only tell what the number is by opening the image in another tab and then reading the URL.

I agree with the posts above expressing scepticism about this. I would have thanked some of them but I was banned from thanking one post.

I see that some people don't have these ornaments devoted only to post count, so I assume this is optional.

Please tell me how do I turn my badges off?

And surely there are medals or stars or something for the same function anyway, so these are superfluous?

Why do I have images off for most browsing? It saves data. A typical MSE forum page is slightly over one megabyte, but the writing is still perfectly legible when the browser restricts that to about 2 or 3% of the amount.
