My first house lounge was a single chair and a 14" portable TV I got for free from a friend. The bedroom was empty apart from a £7.99 air-filled mattress and some sheets thrown on the top.

Then I bought stuff as and when I could afford. Washing machine was first to save petrol and laundry costs, then bed, then about 3 months later was offered a free sofa and grabbed it :)

That said, £600 or so isn't a lot of money.

OP, I had a pair of deckchairs* (back in 1982) until I could afford to buy my suite (with cash).

Is there any reason why he can't do that, because, at the end of the day, a suite now is a 'want' not a 'need'.

    * They blended in nicely with my second hand B&W TV and 'twin-tub' washing machine. Other than a mortgage, I've never been in debt in my life. Coincidence?...I think not!

I have to agree with other posters.

Furniture doesn't need to cost the earth.

When me and OH first moved in together 3 years ago we had no furniture. We bought the essentials - bed £129, mattress £199, sofa £300, wardrobe £125, bedside cabinets £60, chest of drawers £80 etc.
We bought everything flatpack from IKEA - and we fully kitted out a large 2 bed house for less than £1k.

The rest such as coffee tables, TV, desks etc all came second hand which were donated to us by family and friends.

3 years on and we've still got all our original furniture, we've added a few things to the collection over time but its still all going strong.

It makes me laugh that people are willing to pay so much (and get in debt over) kitting a house out.

We had a 2nd hand sofa for about 6 months until we could save up enough to buy a nice corner sofa. We were given a 20 year old dining table and 4 chairs, which lasted us 4 years! Cutlery and plates from Wilko's etc.

Plenty of ways of furnishing on the cheap.

Yes but the OP's son has just moved into his first house, so he needs all the best stuff to impress the laydees (or guys depending on his preference).

You can't expect them to put out if all he is offering is an orange crate and a blow up mattress.

Taking out a mortgage wouldn't affect any applications for credit, there must be something he isn't telling you.

    Well it would.

It starts off with credit searches.

It then progresses to a six figure debt appearing on the credit file.

And answering the question "time at address?" with one month doesn't help. Especially as you're not on the voters roll.

Another vote for second hand here, we moved in with 2 deck chairs, a tv and a xmas tree! Happy days! Wished we'd stayed with that way of living but unfortunately some years later fell into the buy now pay later trap and are still paying! Nearly there now though thankfully....

Absolutely secondhand, got lots of furniture from friends and colleagues back in the day. It's amazing what you can unearth if you just ask!

We had carpets and two sheepskin rugs in our 30 foot living room for months!!!! I simply cannot understand why people buy a first home and expect it to be showroom furnished. Get free cycle and save up!!!
