After reading through these threads i have come to the conclusion that obviously everyone hopes that Madeline is found safe and well, and the majority of people wonder why on earth they left them, this issue is obviously one which will be addressed at a later date. The thing which concerns me about all this is if it had happened to a child from a family of a lower social background would the same sort of appeal, and publicity have happened.Sadly i think not,a lot of strings have been pulled so any sort of appeal should help all families.I am also wondering if she is still alive,i have a niece who is the same age and who is really bright and chatty and anyone who abducted her would have a hard job silencing her in public places cos she never shuts up.Lets just hope she is found soon!

Also if they had been of a lower social background they would have already been charged with neglect and have a bad story about them written in the papers.

I recall the case of the parents who's children burned to death while they were having a 'romantic evening' downstairs. They were gaoled. They too were parents who had neglected their children (I think they locked the children in a bedroom so they wouldn't be interrupted while 'being romantic', and one of the children had matches - horrible horrible story) and were very unlucky to be caught out in such a tragic way.
Being from a lower social class to the McCanns they got treated in a very different way in cases which are comparable.

I hope someone can confirm or deny but my understanding is that if you are in a different country then you have to abide by that countries laws and if in the UK you have to abide by UK laws.

I'm not talking morals here, I talking legals.

Does anyone know whether this is true?

If so, then does this qualify for an offence in Portugal?

I would say that legally the 2 cases are different because on happened in the Uk and one happened in Portugal and different laws may apply.

Something else that has occured to me is that the holiday company should be being slated for putting in place such inadequate childcare provision. Personally, I would never use anything other than a one-to-one babysitting service and probably not even that but the fact that this roving service is available makes it
a: seem ok to parents to leave their child
b: an open invitation to dodgy characters

I believe the hotel do offer a 1-1 service as well as a listening service. The McCann's decided not to use either of these.

This type of resort is aimed at people who don't want to spend all day with their children - personally I think children should come first - but there is obviously a market for this type of place.

i don;t think the Police should be criticised. After all they are spending millions of their budget to help a british couple out who have been very very silly. If this happened in some other countries, well...

Really? I thought they were trying to find a missing child.

You are quite right emmaroids, it is still neglect, no parent I know of would leave their child in bed in an unlocked house and go over the road to a friends house for a coffee, would they?

The McCanns have made a huge mistake and they are suffering for their lack of judgement/common sense, they should be brought back to the UK immediately to face charges of neglect.

Sorry to be so blunt but neglect is neglect, and you would expect more from two highly intelligent people, I'll be watching the interview on SKY at 5.00pm, have anyone noticed Madeleine is no-where to be seen on the front page of the BBC news website this morning, I think the media is standing on egg shells at the moment with the McCanns and once the McCanns have signed an exclusive deal with one paper/tv channel the others will start slating them, and quite rightly so!

  • Wonder how the British Press would feel if it was a nanny in charge of the kids who'd decided to put them to bed and go up for a meal at the Tapas Bar.

I keep on wishing that they will find her, and just keep on thinking why 2 intelligent people would do such a thing when there's so many couples out there who would give anything to have what they have 3 beautiful children (I say have as I hope and pray that she will be found).
